Meet the new Chief Digital & Innovation Officer at Equinix

Last week it was announced that Equinix had appointed Harmeen Mehta as the company’s Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Innovation Officer.
Effective from 4th April 2025, Harmeen brings to Equinix more than 28 years of experience in digital transformation within the technology infrastructure sector. In her role, she hopes to align technology capabilities with business strategy to drive the data centre operator’s digital transformation agenda.
Firstly, she will focus on leveraging emerging technologies to enhance customer experience, improve operational efficiency and develop innovative business models across the company's global platform.
Harmeen will serve on the Equinix Executive Staff and report directly to company CEO and President Adaire Fox-Martin.
“Harmeen is a visionary leader with a proven track record in digital transformation and innovation,” Adaire comments.
“Her experience in leading complex programmes and developing innovative solutions will equip us to better serve our customers and enhance experiences across the organisation.”
Equinix commits to bolstering its leadership
Prior to joining Equinix, Mehta worked across the telecommunications sector. She served as Chief Digital and Innovation Officer at leading telco company BT Group, where she spearheaded digital and AI-driven transformation initiatives that ultimately worked to reshape customer experience and operational efficiency metrics.
She was also Global CIO and CEO of the Cloud and Security Business at Bharti Airtel Ltd, where she led various digital transformation efforts.
Additionally, she has held senior technology leadership positions at major financial institutions including BBVA, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and HSBC. She has also worked as a consultant to British Airways and Qantas.
Currently, Harmeen serves as a non-executive director on the board of Lloyds Banking Group and as Vice-Chair and Board member of global telecoms association, TM Forum.
She has been recognised for her contributions across the technology industry with numerous awards, including the MIT Sloan CIO Leadership Award, the TM Forum Global CIO of the YEar Award and the Women of the Decade in Innovation & Leadership distinction from the Women Economic Forum.
The Economic Times has also named her one of the top ten women in the telecom and technology industry in the world.
Meeting innovation at a critical juncture
Harmeen’s appointment comes as data centre operators are facing increasing levels of pressure to innovate. This is partly due to surging demands from AI workloads, sustainability requirements and changing customer expectations causing the industry to reevaluate critical strategies.
As an industry leader, Equinix currently has more than 250 data centres operating across 70 markets. It sits as a key figure within the rapidly-changing data centre landscape.
With this in mind, Harmeen’s background in telecommunications and financial services is desirable for addressing the complex challenges facing data centre infrastructure providers. Likewise, her expertise in AI could help Equinix align further with the growing focus on automation and operational efficiency in data centre operations.
Equinix has been moving to create new C-suite roles in recent years, signalling its intention to accelerate its digital capabilities beyond traditional data centre services. Likewise, the company hopes to address opportunities for it to become a strategic platform for customers who are seeking to design their own digital business.
Appointments like Harmeen’s demonstrate Equinix’s commitment to support cloud providers and edge computing specialists as they reshape the boundaries of traditional infrastructure. She perhaps also demonstrates a focus on digital service delivery.
“Equinix is a truly unique company – the hidden layer that enables the innovations that people rely on every day, from video calls and online shopping to the foundational pillars of modern society like food production and drug discovery,” Harmeen says.
“With an eye on innovation, I look forward to leading Equinix's transformational journey to deliver even greater opportunities for the thousands of customers that rely upon Equinix every day for their mission-critical digital infrastructure.”
