Blackstone made its largest investment in APAC

Financial services giant Blackstone entered into an agreement to acquire AirTrunk, a data centre company based in the Asia-Pacific region. The definitive agreement to acquire AirTrunk was for an implied enterprise value of over AU$24bn (US$16bn). 

As a result of the acquisition, Blackstone is capitalising on the building of new data centre facilities as a leading investor globally, as well as in addressing the data centre sector’s power needs.

“This is Blackstone at its best – leveraging our global platform to capitalise on our highest conviction theme,” said Jon Gray, President and Chief Operating Officer of Blackstone. “AirTrunk is another vital step as Blackstone seeks to be the leading digital infrastructure investor in the world across the ecosystem, including data centres, power and related services.”

This was Blackstone’s largest investment in the Asia Pacific region, subject to approval from the Australian Foreign Investment Review Board.

Sage Geosystems & Meta’s Geothermal Power Generation

Sage Geosystems and Meta agreed to expand the use of geothermal power in the US

Sage Geosystems and Meta Platforms have announced an agreement to expand the use of geothermal power in the US. 

This is a clear demonstration of the critical role clean, firm and resilient power plays in meeting the electricity demand from the technology sector. As companies seek to capitalise on AI and cloud computing technologies, power demand from data centres has grown dramatically.

The amount of data centre supply under construction in North America jumped by 69% compared to in 2023 Reaching a record 3.9 gigawatts (GW), research released by CBRE Group finds under-construction activity in primary markets has dramatically increased. However, a shortage of available power and longer lead times for electrical infrastructure has continued to delay construction projects from being completed.
