Lisbon's new €50m Equinix data centre
For centuries, Portugal has been a link from Europe to the Atlantic. Equinix is advancing its role as a hub for terrestrial & subsea cable networks

Digital infrastructure company Equinix is building its second IBX data centre in Lisbon, Portugal. The new LS2 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre, will be next to Equinix's LS1 site. Together, LS1 and LS2 will create a dense digital ecosystem and offer much-needed digital capacity to Portugal, which will offer a boost to local businesses and attract global companies to leverage Platform Equinix® in this perfectly placed hub for international networks.

Equinix's LS2: operational resiliency and world-class security

Equinix data centres are designed with high operational standards and energy efficiency in mind. The company has invested more than US$129m in energy efficiency upgrades, retrofits and improvements, and is constantly seeking new ways to innovate within its data centres – having committed to science-based targets to embed decarbonisation actions across its business and supply chain. Equinix has set a goal to be climate neutral by 2030, backed by science-based targets, across its global portfolio and data centre platform, which is why we listed the company in our Top 10: Sustainable Data Centre Companies

Equinix's global platform, consisting of 260 data centres across the world, will strengthen digital connectivity across Europe.

Equinix's LS2 facility will serve as a gateway to Europe from Africa and as a connection point for data communications between Latin America, Europe and North America.

The facility is due to open in the first quarter of 2025, which will create up to 30 new direct and indirect high skilled jobs and which will accommodate 2050 square metres of colocation space. This will provide scalable technical space and fully redundant power supplies, that deliver operational resiliency and world-class security.

Together, the existing LS1 and the new LS2 Lisbon data centres will provide:
  • 2000+ cross-connections
  • Network connectivity services for 100+ business customers
  • 45+ networks
  • Four Internet Exchanges

Equinix remains dedicated to ensuring sustainability and environmental responsibility. The LS2 data centre will run on 100% renewable energy and has already achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. As the first company in the data centre industry to commit to becoming climate neutral globally by 2030, Equinix remains committed to reducing emissions and source clean and renewable energy for its global platform.

Equinix is serving the world’s digital infrastructure

Portugal was the first to have direct fibre connectivity to all continents. Now, there are 11 subsea cables landing in the Lisbon area. All subsea cables landing in the Lisbon area end-up in Equinix data centres.

Carlos Paulino, Managing Director of Equinix in Portugal, says that the surge in demand that they are seeing from companies in Lisbon and across the Atlantic and Mediterranean, makes this investment timely and significant.

“Lisbon has the potential to become a dense and valuable strategic hub, and we are delighted to contribute to its growth and position ourselves as the cornerstone of Europe,” he said.

Judith Gardiner, Vice President for Growth and Emerging Markets at Equinix, highlighted the need for addressing sustainably in the data centre industry.

“Equinix is committed to supporting the sustainable growth of the Internet to serve economies across the world,” said Judith. “Lisbon has immense potential to become a valuable strategic hub for international businesses scaling their operations across Europe, the Americas and Africa. Our newest Lisbon IBX solidifies Equinix’s position as the leading connectivity provider for southern Europe, serving the world’s digital infrastructure needs beautifully.
