How atNorth is Expanding its Data Centre Presence in Sweden
Leading Nordic colocation, high-performance computing (HPC) and AI service provider, atNorth, has secured land in the Sollefteå Municipality.
Situated in the Hamre Industripark in Långsele, Sweden, the 30 hectare plot is strategically located for its infrastructure, energy capacity and benefits from Sweden’s cool climate, abundance of renewable energy and highly skilled workforce.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Sollefteå Municipality and the Hamre area”, says Johan Andersson, Chair of the Municipal Executive Committee.
“We are delighted to collaborate with atNorth, a company that leads in data centre solutions and sustainable technology. This project can help strengthen our region as a hub for innovative development”.
A new mega site in Sweden
The news from atNorth follows a recent commitment from the company that it would be expanding its ICE02 and ICE03 data centres in Iceland. The sites are being expanded in response to increasing demand for atNorth’s sustainable infrastructure, which will help meet AI and HPC needs in a more environmentally-friendly way.
Furthermore, the service provider also announced its newest data centre development in Denmark, DEN02. This newest data centre site will be built to support colocation and build-to-suit projects, ideally for hyperscalers and businesses which run AI and HPC workloads.
The company has three other new data centre sites in development, including two in Finland - FIN02 and FIN04 - and an additional site in Denmark, DEN01. As far as Sweden is concerned, atNorth opened its state-of-the-art SWE01 site in Stockholm in 2022.
In Sollefteå Municipality, the newly-secured land is intended to be the location of atNorth’s first mega site in Sweden.
A mega data centre is a single facility that contains more than 15,000 servers and is spread across a large area. Power capabilities of these data centres can range from 10 megawatts (MW) up to 100MW.
“We are excited to be exploring the possibility of a new mega site in Sweden to complement our existing metro sites”, says Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO at atNorth. “As the demand for our sustainable infrastructure continues to increase we are committed to scaling in a responsible way that benefits the Nordic locations we inhabit”.
A masterclass in data centre design
atNorth remains a leading Nordic data centre services company that offers sustainable, cost-effective and scalable colocation and HPC services trusted by industry-leading organisations.
Notably, the business acquired leading HPC provider Gompute in 2023, which enabled a compelling full-stack offering tailored to AI and other critical high performance workloads.
With sustainability at its core, atNorth's data centres are run on renewable energy resources and are designed to support circular economy principles. Likewise, all atNorth sites leverage innovative design, power efficiency and intelligent operations to provide long-term infrastructure and flexible colocation deployments.
The tailor-made solutions also enable businesses to calculate, simulate, train and visualise data workloads in an efficient and cost-optimised way. One such solution is heat reuse, with the company eager to deploy energy efficient designs to help businesses investing in AI tools decarbonise their operations.
Currently, atNorth operates seven data centres in strategically-located sites across the Nordics, with additional sites due to open in Helsinki, Finland, in the early months of 2025, in addition to its new Denmark facility in 2025.
