Ian Ferguson, Regional Director for EMEA for Iceotope, discusses Precision Liquid Cooling and its sustainability merits in AI-driven environments

Liquid cooling removes heat directly from data centres server components. This is more effective than air cooling, because of the higher heat capacity of liquids. If a data centre is not cooled, there is a risk of overheating, which could lead to service interruptions and even hardware damage.

Iceotope Technologies provides Precision Liquid Cooling to sustainably and efficiently cool facilities. Ian Ferguson, Regional Director for EMEA for Iceotope, shares with us the science behind Precision Liquid Cooling and its sustainability merits.

Iceotope's Precision Liquid Cooling offers sustainability and efficiency

Iceotope is a UK-based global leader in Precision Liquid Cooling technologies, which are designed to enhance the efficiency of data centres worldwide.

Data centres consume 3% of the world’s energy and it takes billions of litres of fresh water each year to keep them cool. Without solutions like Iceotope’s, these unsustainable numbers will continue to rise, making the environmental impact of data centres a public concern.

Iceotope’s Precision Liquid Cooling (PLC) is revolutionising data centre design and operations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and the US. By partnering with industry giants such as Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and Intel, Iceotope delivers cooling solutions that reduce power consumption by up to 40% and water usage by up to 100% per kW of IT equipment.

“Data centre operators are navigating the complexities of AI's impact on infrastructure in real-time,” says Ian. “Amidst the tension between power, sustainability and data centre growth, innovative solutions are crucial to effectively address these challenges. Precision Liquid Cooling is one such solution.”

Combining the benefits of direct-to-chip and tank immersion, Precision Liquid Cooling efficiently manages the thermal load by precisely circulating dielectric fluid directly over the hottest components first.

“It removes nearly 100% of the heat generated across the entire IT stack, cutting energy use by up to 40% and water consumption by up to 100%,” Ian continues. “This ensures optimal operating temperatures while significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption.

“With Precision Liquid Cooling data centres can better balance efficiency, sustainability and total cost of ownership, positioning themselves for growth in an increasingly energy-intensive AI landscape.”

Iceotope Labs: AI-driven data centres, HPC and Edge Environments

Iceotope Labs has previously conducted a range of testing for next-generation chip level cooling, at both 1500W and 1000W, which proved the Precision Liquid Cooling’s ability to hit the thermal demands of future computing architectures needed for AI

Iceotope has worked in partnership with Efficiency IT, a UK-based data centre specialist, which also works across IT and critical communications environments. The first of Iceotope’s labs showcase the flexibility of leveraging liquid cooling in a host of data centre settings, including:

  • HPC
  • Supercomputing
  • Edge environments.

The small-scale liquid cooled data centre includes two temperature-controlled test rooms and dedicated space for thermal, mechanical and electronic testing for next generation CPUs and GPUs to racks and manifolds.

“Iceotope Labs not only serves as a blueprint for what a liquid cooled data centre should be but is also a collaborative hub for clients to explore liquid cooling solutions without the need for their own lab space,” said David Craig, then-CEO of Iceotope. “It's a transformative offering within the data centre industry."

Read our exclusive interview with David Craig here, where he discussed sustainability in the data centre sector and Iceotope’s reputation as a cooling solutions pioneer.
