EDGNEX is also eager to boost Madrid’s data centre capacity
EDGNEX Data Centers by DAMAC aims to further expand its operations in Europe with a 40MW data centre investment in Spain to boost AI and HPC capabilities

As a global digital infrastructure provider, EDGNEX Data Centers by DAMAC has already been expanding its international presence. Part of these efforts is its significant step to acquire land in Madrid, Spain, for the development of a cutting-edge data centre.

The 22,000 square metre facility will have the committed power of 40 megawatts (MW), according to EDGNEX, with operations said to commence by 2026.

Such an undertaking in Madrid highlights DAMAC’s continued commitment to expand its footprint across Spain and further strengthen its position as a leading global data centre operator.

Madrid’s vibrant data centre market

The new site has been acquired from real estate private equity manager ActivumSG and is only 10km away from Madrid International Airport. It is also 5km away from the Internet Exchange and so plans to offer exceptional connectivity within two years.

EDGNEX is also eager to boost Madrid’s data centre capacity and allow hyperscalers and enterprise clients to expand their availability zones. Likewise, the company hopes that businesses will be able to access advanced high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, which are currently highly sought-after technologies.

All things considered, EDGNEX hopes the new site will quickly become a preferred location for continued innovation and digital growth within Europe.

“We plan on investing €400m (US$434m) in our first 40MW investment in the Spanish Data Centre space,” comments Hussain Sajwani, Founder of DAMAC Group.

"Spain’s advanced connectivity, strategic location, and commitment to renewable energy make it an ideal hub for expanding our high-performance infrastructure. As we continue our global expansion, we will deliver scalable, robust solutions that serve the needs of hyperscalers and enterprise clients within a rapid timeframe."

He adds: Alongside looking at additional investments in Madrid, we will look for opportunities in strategic locations such as Barcelona, Zaragosa, and other locations in Spain”

Outside of the FLAPD market (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris & Dublin), Madrid is quickly becoming a strong data centre presence within Europe.

Earlier in 2024, the data centre sector in Spain was predicted to have a very strong outlook by Research and Markets and is expected to grow from US$1.9bn (2023) to US$2.85bn at a CAGR of 6.99%.

The country’s location is a huge advantage, as the country’s submarine cables in the south help connect Europe to Africa. A strong number of technology companies currently invest in data centres in Madrid, including Microsoft, Iberdrola, Pure DC and Prime Data.

Achieving sustainable growth

DAMAC is hopeful that its investment into Spain will enable EDGNEX to invest in other key European data centre growth markets.

According to the organisation, the new Madrid site is designed to not only meet continued demands for digital infrastructure, but will also actively contribute to Spain’s sustainability goals.

Already, 60% of the country’s power is generated from renewable sources, as part of its long-term goal to make Spain carbon neutral by 2050. The EDGNEX facility will therefore be designed to minimise environmental impact and further support environmentally-conscious development.

Such an undertaking reflects DAMAC Group’s desire to provide scalable and efficient data centres that are also environmentally responsible.

“Our data centres have tremendous potential to enhance the country’s competitiveness by providing businesses with scalable digital infrastructure, driving innovation, sustainability, and job creation,” explains Tarun Tyagi, Senior Vice President of DAMAC, International Business.

“This site is one of the few prime locations in Madrid with secured, fully redundant power available within two years from two independent substations, ensuring rapid deployment in a market facing significant demand-supply challenges.”

EDGNEX’s facility in Spain and European expansion builds on DAMAC’s recent data centre developments in the Middle East and Türkiye, with recent announcements in Bangkok and Indonesia to solidify its presence in the APAC region.
