In Brazil, Scala Data Centers has begun Phase 2 of the Tamboré Campus, with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas committing US$1.13bn to support sustainable growth

Scala Data Centers is the leading provider of sustainable, hyperscale data centres in the LATAM market. The company is headquartered in Brazil and was the first data centre company in Latin America to use 100% renewable energy.

Scala Data Centers has just inaugurated Phase 2 of its Tamboré Campus, the largest in Latin America, following US$1.13bn dollar investment.

Developing Latin America with data and mobility

The second phase will have 158 MW of IT capacity, including two buildings already in operation, SGRUTB08 and SGRUTB12, which both serve two Hyperscale clients.

This will involve a substation and three buildings under construction—SGRUTB09, SGRUTB10 and SGRUTB67, with clients already secured. They are expected to become operational in 2025.

The committed investment for this phase is US$1.13bn, which exceeds the total planned investment for the construction of the Santos-Guarujá Tunnel US$1.06bn. With the investment already made in Phase 1, Scala's total investment in this campus exceeds US$1.82bn.

Once fully completed, the campus will feature 17 buildings and three power substations, making it one of the ten biggest in the world, with a total capacity of 600 MW, equivalent to the energy consumption of Brasil.

Scala’s workforce development will create 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. In its mission to develop the future of Latin America Scala is also improving urban mobility by expanding fibre and energy routes.

‘Wealth of nations resides in data’ says Scala CEO

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas said he was concerned that if time was wasted, São Paulo would fall behind in data centre development.

"We are witnessing the future here. The wealth of nations is no longer in metals, gold, or industry; today, it resides in data, in the knowledge economy,” he said. “São Paulo has become a hub for this new economy, a hub of data centres. Scala's Tamboré Campus is a clear example of this. We are very happy with the leap we are making."

"Scala is an example of what the city of Barueri offers, of the partnerships we have in our city with businesses and the population, making Barueri one of the most important cities in the state of São Paulo and Brazil," said Vice-Mayor of the municipality, Beto Piteri.

Marcos Peigo, CEO and Co-Founder of Scala, believes that this is only the beginning of what Brazil can achieve.

“The demand for data centres is growing seven to ten times with the rise of artificial intelligence, positioning us not only to serve the local market but also to export data centre solutions, helping to solve global challenges, especially in North America. I am very proud to be in São Paulo, in Barueri, with this project, reaffirming our commitment to continue investing and enabling progress in our nation and the region."

Marcos previously spoke with Data Centre magazine to discuss bringing hyperscale to the LATAM market.

“We really believe that digital infrastructure is the way to pave the future for these countries and to enable growth in a sustainable manner. This isn’t something that happens in one meeting or with one press release; this is a process, and it takes time.”
