ABB and VoltaGrid: Expanding AI Power Infrastructure

ABB has secured additional large orders from VoltaGrid, a Texas-based microgrid power generation company, to support data centre power projects worldwide as demand for AI continues to accelerate.
The agreement, which was signed on 25 March 2026 in Houston, Texas, during the global energy conference CERAWeek, builds on an existing collaboration between the two companies.
It focuses on delivering reliable, stable and rapidly deployable power infrastructure tailored to hyperscale AI workloads. The orders are expected to be booked in the second quarter of 2026, with financial terms undisclosed.
The deal focuses on ABBâs supply of 35 synchronous condensers equipped with flywheel technology, alongside prefabricated eHouse units.
These systems are designed to stabilise power in VoltaGridâs behind-the-meter energy solutions, supporting the voltage requirements of next-generation AI chips and high-density compute environments.
Stabilising power for AI workloads
As AI-driven data centres scale rapidly, maintaining consistent and resilient power supply has become increasingly complex. ABB’s synchronous condensers are engineered to address these challenges by acting as stabilising assets within the grid.
The technology provides instantaneous inertia, helping to absorb fluctuations and maintain system balance during disturbances.
It also supports short-circuit events and enables reactive power management to maintain voltage levels, which are critical for ensuring uninterrupted operation in facilities running power-intensive AI workloads.
In addition to the condensers, ABB’s scope includes high-availability medium- and low-voltage distribution infrastructure as well as excitation systems. These components are designed to maximise uptime and ensure the continuous performance required by hyperscale data centre operators.
“VoltaGrid’s power platform is purpose-built to deliver large-scale power with exceptional dynamic performance and reliability for next-generation digital infrastructure,” says Nathan Ough, CEO of VoltaGrid.
âBy integrating ABBâs advanced grid stabilisation technologies with our AI-optimised power systems, we are able to meet increasingly stringent transient performance requirements while accelerating deployment at gigawatt scale.â
Modular infrastructure and deployment speed
VoltaGridâs approach to power delivery centres on modular, behind-the-meter systems that can be deployed quickly and efficiently. These solutions are designed to meet the needs of hyperscale operators seeking rapid capacity expansion without compromising on reliability.
The companyâs systems also prioritise operational efficiency, reduced noise output and a compact physical footprint, which are increasingly important factors as data centres expand into urban and constrained environments.
ABBâs prefabricated eHouse units complement this strategy by enabling faster installation and integration of electrical infrastructure. By combining modular design with high-performance stabilisation equipment, the partnership aims to streamline the rollout of large-scale data centre power systems.
Meeting rising energy demand
The collaboration comes at a time when global data centre energy consumption continues to rise. In 2024, data centres accounted for approximately 1.5% of global electricity usage, with the US representing around 45% of that demand.
As AI workloads drive further growth, operators are under pressure to secure sustainable and scalable energy solutions that can handle increasing loads while maintaining efficiency and reliability.
âExtending our collaboration with VoltaGrid demonstrates the strength of ABBâs businesses working together combining automation, electrification and motion expertise and technologies with innovative distributed power systems to create greater value for customers," says Per Erik Holsten, President of ABBâs Energy Industries division.
“Together, we are enabling reliable, resilient and scalable power infrastructure for data centres serving the rapidly growing AI economy.”
ABB supports data centres globally through a portfolio of automation and digitalisation technologies. These systems are designed to enhance operational performance while enabling facilities to scale in line with demand.
