CDM Acquires R&D Specialties for AI Data Centre Capacity

Compu Dynamics Modular (CDM) is acquiring a majority stake in R&D Specialties, an ISO and UL-certified manufacturer based in Odessa, Texas.
The move is centred on data centre infrastructure, as CDM strengthens its design engineering and manufacturing capabilities to meet rising demand for modular, prefabricated facilities built for AI workloads.
Demand for modular data centres is increasing as operators seek infrastructure that supports high-density compute, faster deployment and repeatable design.
CDM is positioning its modular platforms for IT, AI and high-performance computing (HPC).
Modular data centres become the default approach
The acquisition reflects how modular infrastructure is moving from an alternative option to a primary strategy, in response to changing requirements in speed and scalability as AI workloads expand.
Modular systems allow operators to build data centres in prefabricated sections, which are manufactured off-site and assembled on location. This reduces build times and introduces consistency across deployments. It also supports rapid scaling, as additional modules can be added when demand increases.
"Modular infrastructure is where efficiency meets innovation,” says Ron Mann, Vice President of CDM.
“For decades, we've delivered solutions that solve real engineering challenges in high-stakes environments. Joining forces with R&D Specialties allows us to bring that expertise to the next generation of AI data centres at scale."
CDM works with a network of manufacturing partners across the US, enabling it to deliver large-scale modular campuses. The company offers end-to-end services, covering design, engineering, manufacturing, deployment, commissioning and maintenance.
Engineering depth meets AI infrastructure demand
The addition of R&D Specialties introduces further manufacturing capability and engineering expertise. The company is known for producing control panels and modular electrical systems used in mission-critical environments, where performance and reliability are essential.
"This investment is about building the capabilities and capacity the market is demanding right now,” says Steve Altizer, President and CEO of CDM.
“AI infrastructure requires a different approach; one that delivers faster, scales smarter, and performs better. R&D Specialties brings the engineering depth and manufacturing precision that align perfectly with where this industry is headed."
R&D Specialties complements CDM’s platforms, which integrate high-density power distribution, liquid cooling and network solutions.
Expanded manufacturing footprint and capacity
The combined business now operates 120,000 square feet of manufacturing space, with additional capacity available across a 15-acre campus. This footprint supports increased production of modular units designed for AI data centres.
R&D Specialties brings an engineering-led approach and a focus on long-term customer relationships. Its experience in building modular power systems aligns with the demands of hyperscale operators.
“Through joining forces with CDM, our growth opportunities for the combined teams have expanded even further,” said Brad Howell, President of R&D Specialties.
“Being part of the AI infrastructure revolution and building what’s next is exciting as we look toward our collective future.”
The combined capabilities of the companies focus on delivering high-volume, high-performance systems designed for AI workloads expected through 2026 and beyond.
Beyond its own facilities, CDM continues to rely on an established partner network across North America.
