Discover how Castrol uses advanced sensor technology, rigorous lab testing and end-to-end services to shape the future of thermal management

Thermal management remains a critical priority for data centre operators as rack densities increase and efficiency targets tighten. To address these heavy compute demands, liquid cooling solutions are steadily gaining traction. Castrol is actively expanding its presence in this space by combining its long history in fluid manufacturing with a strategic partnership model.

According to Amanda Song, Global Marketing Head for Thermal Management at Castrol, the company is determined to be a premium service provider for hyperscale and colocation clients.

"We ourselves at Castrol want to position ourselves as a top leading service provider in the market for data centres," she explains.

Delivering an end-to-end service

Supplying thermal fluids is only one part of the equation. To support operators fully, vendors are shifting towards comprehensive service models. Castrol achieves this through deep collaboration with external experts and hardware manufacturers.

Andrea Zunino, Global Offer Development Manager at Castrol, notes that this strategy mirrors the company's historical approach across other sectors.

"Castrol's approach has always been about not only providing products but coupling products with services," he says.

This working model supports customers through the entire lifecycle of a facility, from initial design and construction to ongoing maintenance and eventual fluid disposal.

Amanda adds that this comprehensive journey naturally requires collaboration with established industry experts: "That's why we have a very strong partnership with the top leading players in the data centre industry, leveraging their capability coupled with our own."

Innovation and global testing capabilities

A major differentiator for Castrol is its robust testing infrastructure. The company currently operates four laboratories globally – located in the UK, the US, China and Germany – with a fifth facility currently under construction. This internal capacity is supplemented by external collaborations to address specific customer pain points such as potential fluid leakages.

Andrea highlights that the company has 126 years of fluid manufacturing experience to draw upon when mitigating these risks. To further support adoption and provide peace of mind, Castrol has integrated advanced sensor technology for 24/7 inline monitoring. These systems track vital fluid parameters in real time.

"We found this an innovative approach that works very well for us in helping our customers through their liquid cooling journey," Andrea says.

Amanda agrees that the importance of liquid sensors in the data centre cannot be overstated. By constantly monitoring conductivity and pH levels, Castrol can better understand operator needs and deliver targeted after-sales support.

Ensuring these solutions meet strict industry benchmarks is also a top priority, with sensor parameters strictly following the latest Open Compute Project (OCP) standards.

Preparing for future cooling demands

Looking ahead, Castrol is investing heavily in product development to meet the evolving thermal requirements of next-generation hardware. The portfolio is rapidly expanding to cover more intensive cooling applications across the data centre floor.

Amanda points to the company's DTX product line as a prime example of this ongoing technical development.

"Previously, we only addressed secondary cooling, but now we're stepping into primary cooling as well," she explains.

As data centres continue to upgrade their infrastructure to support heavier workloads, Castrol is scaling its network to match. The increasing number of hardware collaborations and significant ongoing investments ensure the company remains equipped to support the industry over the coming months and years.
