CyrusOne Boosts Sustainability in Global Data Centre Growth

CyrusOne, which operates more than 55 data centres across North America, Europe and Asia, is embedding sustainability into every aspect of its development strategy.
As demand for digital infrastructure rises sharply, the company is aligning new builds, upgrades and operational practices with environmental goals that include emissions reduction, waste minimisation and green financing.
Its most recent announcements focus on facility expansion in London, certification milestones in the US and measurable carbon progress across its global operations.
For data centre operators navigating energy intensity and climate expectations, CyrusOne’s approach offers an example of how scale can be delivered without increasing environmental impact.
Expansion in London aligned with low-carbon strategy
CyrusOne is planning a new data centre facility in London, further extending its European footprint.
The expansion reflects growing demand for scalable, energy-efficient digital infrastructure in the UK, particularly in sectors that require low latency and high availability.
“This development marks an important step in our European growth journey,” says Matt Pullen, EVP and Managing Director, Europe, CyrusOne.
“We’re thrilled to be announcing our plans for this new facility and continuing our growth in London.
“As demand for digital services continues to accelerate, larger facilities are necessary to provide the economies of scale that customers need, while also ensuring maximum functionality and mitigated risk of downtime.
“The UK market enables us to respond to these requirements, and we look forward to continuing our expansion and supporting the Government to establish the UK as a centre of excellence in digital services for technology innovation.”
The planned site will build on CyrusOne’s existing low-carbon operational model, using efficient systems to reduce power usage effectiveness (PUE) and integrating the company’s sustainability frameworks into new-build design.
TRUE certification and zero-waste operations in Texas
In the US, CyrusOne’s SAT5 facility in San Antonio, Texas, has become the first data centre in the state to receive TRUE Gold certification for zero waste.
Administered by Green Business Certification Inc, the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) system recognises efforts to divert waste from landfill, reduce consumption and improve resource use.
“Achieving TRUE certification for zero waste is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and operational excellence,” says Kyle Myers, Vice President of Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability at CyrusOne.
“This milestone reflects our team’s dedication to minimising waste, optimising resources and driving meaningful change at CyrusOne.
“We are proud to be the first data centre in Texas to achieve TRUE certification.”
The recognition builds on the company’s broader waste strategy, which includes circular material use, supplier engagement and on-site waste stream management at its operational sites.
Cutting emissions while scaling output
Despite a 70% increase in business volume since 2021, CyrusOne has reported a 29% reduction in carbon emissions over the same period.
This has been driven by energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy sourcing and customer support for carbon-free power procurement within data centre environments.
“While our business has grown 70% since 2021, our carbon emissions have decreased by 29%,” says Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne.
“Through years of efforts like energy efficiency projects, new carbon-free electricity contracts and our customers procuring their own carbon-free electricity for our data centres, we have demonstrated that growing our data centre footprint doesn’t mean an increased carbon footprint.”
The company’s 2030 net zero goal is validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and covers both Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions.
Green finance fuels data centre development
To support climate-aligned growth, CyrusOne has increased its reliance on green and sustainability-linked finance.
In 2024, it raised US$12.6bn, with US$11.2bn of that total tied directly to its science-based emissions targets.
This approach builds financial accountability into its environmental commitments while supporting rapid global buildout.
In 2025, the company added a further US$9.7bn to fund expansion across its international portfolio, including the development of data centres that support customer goals for energy efficiency, water use and emissions tracking.
From zero-water cooling systems to habitat restoration initiatives, CyrusOne’s infrastructure strategy now includes environmental performance as a core feature of site design and operations.
With a focus on transparency, the company shares site-level sustainability data with clients to support their own environmental reporting and compliance requirements.
