How TIM Enterprise is Powering Italy’s Data Centre Evolution

TIM Enterprise, Italy’s largest information and communications technology (ICT) platform, has committed to spending US$1.16bn (€1bn) between 2025 and 2027 as part of a programme designed to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
The company represents the technological core of the TIM Group, supporting more than 30,000 businesses and public institutions through advanced digital solutions in cloud, edge computing, cybersecurity, AI, 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Expanding Italy’s data centre backbone
Following an investment of US$406m (€350m) in 2024, the enterprise increases its infrastructure capacity with a planned total capital expenditure of US$1.16bn (€1bn) by 2027.
At the heart of this investment lies an extensive data centre network, with 17 operational sites across the country providing a combined installed capacity of 125MW.
Eight of these sites hold Tier IV certification, known in the industry as the highest level of reliability and fault tolerance for data centre operations. These eight facilities represent half of all Tier IV-certified data centres in Italy.
TIM Enterprise’s plan also includes the creation of a new “AI-ready” facility and upgrades to two existing data centres.
The company has allocated US$121m (€105m) to expand its edge cloud network, a critical component for delivering low-latency and resilient digital services.
Edge cloud computing places data processing closer to users, enabling faster, more reliable performance for businesses and public organisations adopting digital systems.
Elio Schiavo, TIM’s Chief Enterprise & Innovative Solutions Officer, outlines the company’s broader role.
“TIM Enterprise is not only an industrial company, but also the country’s leading technology provider,” he says.
“Through our own applications, specialist knowledge and state-of-the-art digital solutions, we support the growth of businesses and public administrations every day.
“We are developing a robust, secure, all-Italian infrastructure that can support ongoing technological transformation and we are committed to building a truly independent and sustainable European ecosystem.”
Enabling digital sovereignty and cloud resilience
TIM Enterprise positions itself at the centre of Italy’s digital sovereignty strategy. It maintains direct control of its computing infrastructure and proprietary cryptographic key management systems, offering a unique level of data security and autonomy in the Italian market.
This approach ensures that sensitive data remain within national jurisdiction, an essential element for both government and enterprise clients.
The company plays a central role in Italy’s National Strategic Hub (Polo Strategico Nazionale or PSN), a sovereign cloud initiative built in collaboration with Leonardo, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and Sogei.
The PSN provides secure and scalable cloud services for public institutions and sectors deemed critical to national operations.
Its design reflects European efforts to strengthen regional control over data management and digital infrastructure, counterbalancing reliance on non-European cloud providers.
Through these initiatives, TIM Enterprise reinforces Italy’s commitment to building a secure and independent digital ecosystem while aligning with broader European cloud strategies.
Skilled teams and strategic partnerships
With more than 6,400 employees and the largest data centre footprint in Italy, TIM Enterprise delivers infrastructure solutions engineered for efficiency, security and sustainability.
The company integrates specialised expertise through dedicated units: Noovle focuses on cloud and AI development, Olivetti advances IoT and vertical solutions and Telsy manages cybersecurity operations. This structure enables continuous improvement and margin growth across its portfolio.
TIM Enterprise enhances its technology roadmap through alliances with major global cloud providers including Google Cloud, Oracle and Microsoft. These partnerships enable interoperability between platforms and ensure that clients benefit from consistent innovation.
The TIM Group also participates in the Important Project of Common European Interest on Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS), a coordinated European programme designed to strengthen innovation in edge and cloud technologies.
Participation in IPCEI-CIS underlines the group’s commitment to building a connected and competitive European digital framework.
By integrating local expertise with global partnerships, TIM Enterprise is positioning itself as a cornerstone of Italy’s data centre and cloud transformation.
Its infrastructure investments, workforce development and engagement in strategic European initiatives together establish a foundation for ongoing digital resilience.
Through its sustained commitment, TIM Enterprise not only supports national growth but also contributes to a wider European effort to secure technological independence and sustainable digital development.
Its expanding data centre network, coupled with its AI-ready infrastructure and edge capabilities, should ensure that Italy remains well positioned within the evolving global digital landscape.
