Texas-based power infrastructure company establishes Indiana R&D hub for switchgear innovation through sixth acquisition in 24 months

Mission Critical Group has acquired Leman Engineering and Consulting, a Brookston, Indiana manufacturer of switchgear, control systems and power distribution equipment.

The deal marks MCG's second acquisition in 2025 and establishes the Indiana facility as an R&D hub for power generation engineering.

The acquisition strengthens MCG’s position in the Midwest and expands its manufacturing footprint to over one million square feet across the United States. MCG operates in the data centre, healthcare, industrial and oil and gas sectors, providing electrical systems for facilities where power reliability remains non-negotiable.

Leman Engineering brings UL-certified switchgear capabilities to Mission Critical Group

The acquired company specialises in UL 891 switchboards, UL 1558 switchgear and medium-voltage equipment. These capabilities extend MCG’s technical depth in power distribution design and precision manufacturing.

The Indiana operation will maintain its existing leadership structure and continue serving customers from its current location.

Jeff Drees, CEO of Mission Critical Group

Jeff Drees, CEO of Mission Critical Group, says: “LEC has exceptional people and a proven record of quality and innovation.

“By bringing best-in-class companies like LEC into our portfolio, we're strengthening every layer of the power distribution chain, from engineering and manufacturing to service and field execution, and advancing our ability to deliver resilient, US-based power infrastructure.”

The newly established R&D hub will focus on switchgear innovation for onsite generation, prime power, generator paralleling, behind-the-meter systems and microgrids.

These technologies address the growing demand for distributed power solutions, particularly in data centre applications where grid connection delays can extend years.

Data centre power demand in Europe is forecast to reach 200GW by 2030, with microgrids emerging as a solution where grid connections face delays or capacity constraints. US data centre power consumption could reach 35GW by 2030, more than double the 2020 figure, driving demand for behind-the-meter generation and paralleling systems.

Mission Critical Group plans university partnerships for workforce development

MCG will align the R&D hub with university partnerships specialising in power engineering. The initiative aims to advance innovation and workforce development across the electrical manufacturing sector. Randy Leman, President of Leman Engineering and Consulting, will serve as Vice President of Engineering and Product Management for Electrical Equipment at MCG.

The company’s portfolio now includes JTS, Point Eight Power, DVM Power + Control and Leman Engineering and Consulting. Previous acquisitions of JTS and Point Eight Power expanded MCG’s manufacturing facilities to over 700,000 square feet before the Leman deal, with JTS contributing modular power systems and generator enclosures from Idaho and Texas operations, while Point Eight Power added switchgear and switchboards from Louisiana and Mississippi.

MCG’s integrated approach addresses the data centre industry’s shift towards onsite generation. Control systems, switchgear and inverters form the enabling infrastructure for combined heat and power, battery storage and distributed generation arrays. The technology becomes relevant as facilities seek alternatives to lengthy utility interconnection processes.

The McKinney, Texas company employs over 1,000 people with what it describes as 200 years of combined leadership experience in critical power systems. The business model integrates design, manufacturing, delivery and service operations for packaged power solutions.

“We’re proud to join MCG and contribute to its continued growth and innovation,” says Randy Leman.
