Unveiling its Environmental Impact Tracker, OVHcloud hopes to reinforce its commitment to a more sustainable cloud with enhanced carbon calculator

OVHcloud has launched its Environmental Impact Tracker, an enhanced version of the carbon calculator the company introduced in 2023.

Having been a pioneer in sustainable computing for more than 25 years, OVHcloud’s new tracker tool now covers additional cloud universes and will soon provide a multi-criteria approach.

As a highly innovative environmental impact tracking tool, The OVHcloud Environmental Impact Tracker enables customers to have a better understanding and track the carbon emissions associated with their use of cloud

The company says it is considered to be the most comprehensive tool on the market.

The importance of transparent sustainability data

The Environmental Impact Tracker accurately measures the carbon footprint of infrastructures used for Baremetal, Hosted Private Cloud and Public Cloud Compute products. It will also shortly be extended to Public Cloud Storage and Web Hosting.

OVHcloud says its methodology for calculating carbon emissions has been enhanced since the 2023 version of the tool to take into account the complexity and variety of its products – hoping to enable a very high level of accuracy and performance.

It is also designed to provide transparent and exhaustive information covering scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, spanning across the manufacturing phase to infrastructure operation. Likewise, OVHcloud says it offers a complete lifecycle analysis, both in terms of components and the carbon footprint linked to the consumption of cloud services.

When it comes to cloud services, the tool has a benchmark based on the market offers, rewarded for its level of methodological achievement and transparency. The company says this is attested by a study carried out by IJO, the digital responsibility research and expertise firm.

Grégory Lebourg, Global Environmental Director at OVHcloud

“In a world where every action counts, accurately and transparently assessing your environmental footprint is no longer an option – it’s a responsibility,” says Grégory Lebourg, Global Environmental Director at OVHcloud.

“As a committed player, we support our customers in understanding and controlling their impact. That’s why we’re continually improving our Environmental Impact Tracker, a true market benchmark, recognised for its methodological rigour and completeness.

Supercharging the next era of cloud computing

OVHcloud has committed itself to sustainable cloud computing for more than 25 years and hopes that integrating new functionalities to its tracker tool reflects this.

These innovations now make it possible for users to take into account emissions from the usage phase, with two angles, using both the average emission factors of the countries and those of the electricity suppliers with which the Group works, as well as the reconditioning of components during the server assembly phase.

OVHcloud:
  • Contributing to a responsible digital world
  • Some of the best PUE and WUE scores in the industry
  • Ranked among the top 16% of companies in its sector (S&P Global Ratings, 2025)

The company says these improvements provide its customers a better understanding of the carbon footprint of their cloud infrastructure and encourage more sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, OVHcloud is looking to incorporate the tool beyond carbon emissions and also look at water, abiotic resources and the impact of land use.

This type of mapping could prove essential for industries like the data centre sector, which is confronting increased energy and water use given the rising demand for AI and cloud workloads.

Alarmingly, a single data centre can have cooling towers that require millions of gallons of water each year to prevent critical infrastructure from overheating.

Grégory adds: “We are determined to pursue our commitments to contribute to a more sustainable and responsible cloud industry.”

The Environmental Impact Tracker is available to all OVHcloud customers worldwide, with the exception of the US. It can be accessed directly from the OVHcloud Manager and via a dedicated API.
