Prime Data Centers appoints John Bates to lead development and power as AI-driven capacity demands intensify

Prime Data Centers has appointed John Bates as Executive Vice President of Development and Power, tasking the veteran energy executive with leading acquisitions, development and power initiatives across its hyperscale and purpose-built data centre portfolio.

Based in Dallas, the international developer and operator is sharpening its focus on securing reliable, scalable energy as demand for AI-ready facilities accelerates.

John will oversee both grid-connected and behind-the-meter assets, reflecting the growing importance of diversified power strategies in large-scale data centre delivery.

Power as a core development priority

John brings more than 30 years of experience spanning renewable energy, power generation and infrastructure development. His remit at Prime covers the full lifecycle of power strategy – from site acquisition and development through to long-term operational readiness.

As operators race to bring new AI and high-performance computing capacity online, power availability has emerged as one of the primary constraints in key markets. Prime’s leadership sees John’s appointment as central to addressing that challenge.

Nicholas Laag, Founder and CEO at Prime Data Centers

Nicholas Laag, Founder and CEO at Prime Data Centers, says: "Power availability and execution are central to delivering data centre capacity at scale. John brings exceptional depth across development, capital formation and power infrastructure. He has successfully scaled complex platforms in demanding markets, and his leadership will play a key role as we continue expanding our global data centre footprint."

"Prime is a data centre company with a disciplined approach to power and site execution," says John. "I'm excited to bring my experience in power development and capital execution to support Prime's growth and ensure power readiness keeps pace with AI and HPC workload demands."

Experience across generation and renewables

Before joining Prime, John founded and led Radial Power, a distributed renewable generation company serving large real estate portfolio owners. During his tenure, he scaled the platform to more than 300MW of late-stage to operating assets and raised more than US$500m in sponsor equity, tax equity and debt.

Earlier in his career, John established Starmex Energy in Mexico, developing a multi-technology independent power producer platform following the country’s Energy Transition Law. He also held senior leadership roles at Sunnova Energy and NRG Energy, contributing to NRG’s expansion from 5GW to 55GW across fossil, nuclear and renewables portfolios. He began his career at Chevron.

For Prime Data Centers, this background in both conventional and renewable generation aligns with a development model that increasingly blends grid supply with alternative and on-site energy solutions.

As hyperscale and enterprise customers seek AI-ready environments with assured capacity, the integration of power strategy into early-stage site development is becoming a defining feature of data centre expansion plans. John’s appointment signals Prime’s intention to embed that capability at the executive level as it grows its global footprint.
