Teraco JB4 Expansion: Meet Africa’s Largest Data Centre

Teraco, a Digital Realty company and Africa’s largest interconnection hub, has completed a major expansion of its JB4 Bredell Campus in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.
The 30MW addition makes JB4 the largest standalone data centre ever built in Africa, now delivering 50MW of critical IT power load.
The latest phase introduces six new data halls, each capable of supporting 5MW of allocated critical IT power load – a first for the continent.
The halls are fully liquid-to-liquid cooling enabled, giving clients the flexibility to run high-density, air-cooled cloud deployments or direct-to-chip cooling for more intensive AI workloads.
Sustainability and advanced cooling
The JB4 design places sustainability at the centre of operations. A closed-loop chilled water system provides free air cooling, working alongside AI-enabled technology that configures data hall cooling in real time according to IT load and load dispersion.
This approach delivers industry-leading Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), while using zero water for ongoing cooling – a critical factor in regions where water scarcity and supply reliability are challenges.
Built to global hyperscale specifications, JB4’s expansion not only strengthens South Africa’s infrastructure but also the wider sub-Saharan African data centre footprint. It follows the opening of Teraco’s JB5 Isando facility, which added another 30MW of critical IT power load to its Isando Campus in Ekurhuleni.
Regional hub for cloud and AI
Jan Hnizdo, CEO of Teraco, says the company is ready to meet growing demand from both enterprise and hyperscale clients for hybrid cloud and cloud deployments.
“South Africa has become the technology and data centre hub for sub-Saharan Africa, acting as a springboard for cloud, AI and content provision into Africa,” says Jan. “Massive global investments in undersea cables, such as Equiano and 2Africa, further strengthen this position. This will enable global cloud providers to service not only the South African market but also the rest of the sub-Saharan African region.
“Teraco is dedicated to expanding its capacity across key hubs, ensuring our clients have the flexibility to scale and fully leverage digital transformation across the region. We continue to make significant investments in ICT infrastructure and have established Africa’s largest data centre platform. We are proud to offer open-access interconnection and deliver world-class data centre solutions to all our clients.”
Strategic location and interconnection ecosystem
JB4 sits in the heart of Ekurhuleni’s Aerotropolis, a location already home to extensive connectivity infrastructure. Teraco’s facilities here provide access to a wide range of network service providers, regional internet exchange points, content delivery networks, cloud service provider on-ramps and peering at NAPAfrica – the eighth largest internet exchange in the world.
With the addition of JB4’s expanded capacity, Teraco’s platform now delivers 189MW of critical power load across its South African campuses. This includes the Isando Campus (JB1, JB3, JB5) at 70MW, the Bredell Campus (JB2, JB4) at 64MW, the Cape Town Campus (CT1, CT2) at 53MW and its Durban facility (DB1) at 2MW.
Supporting enterprise transformation
Organisations undergoing digital transformation increasingly rely on Teraco to scale IT infrastructure, adopt hybrid multi-cloud strategies and connect with key business partners within the Platform Teraco ecosystem.
The expansion of JB4 reinforces this capability, offering a secure, high-performance environment for mission-critical deployments.
The company’s open-access model ensures enterprises can connect to the widest choice of carriers and network service providers, enabling a resilient and future-ready interconnection strategy.
By integrating advanced cooling systems, sustainable operations and hyperscale-ready capacity, Teraco’s JB4 campus positions itself as a leading hub for AI, cloud and enterprise workloads in Africa.
