DC BLOX will add capacity for five new subsea cables at its Myrtle Beach data centre campus, boosting international connectivity across the US Southeast

DC BLOX has announced plans to expand its Myrtle Beach cable landing station, a key digital gateway on the US East Coast. The development will create additional subsea cable capacity and increase power availability, reinforcing the company’s role as a major interconnection provider in the region.

The planned expansion includes the acquisition of around 20 acres of land within the Myrtle Beach International Technology and Aerospace Park (ITAP). The new site will accommodate up to five additional subsea cables and deliver a further 20MW of power from the existing on-site substation.

Expanding global connectivity

DC BLOX opened its first Myrtle Beach Cable Landing Station (MYR1) in 2023 to support a resilient international communications route linking the US with Europe, South America, the Caribbean and Africa. MYR1 remains the largest facility of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard, serving as a critical interconnection hub for hyperscalers, content providers and telecom carriers.

The new MYR2 facility will complement existing subsea systems such as Firmina, Anjana and Nuvem, further strengthening Myrtle Beach’s position as a global landing point for international data traffic. The expansion aligns with surging demand for bandwidth and international network diversity, driven by the growth of AI workloads, cloud computing and digital services.

“Demand for landing subsea cables in Myrtle Beach has been extraordinary and the rapid addition of new carrier partners into MYR1 has significantly enhanced the facility’s connectivity ecosystem,” says Jeff Wabik, Chief Technology Officer at DC BLOX.

“By preparing for MYR2, DC BLOX is enabling new digital infrastructure development across the region by global hyperscale companies and ensuring continued growth of the Southeast’s digital economy.”

The expansion will further integrate Myrtle Beach into global network routes, allowing faster, more resilient connections between North America and key international markets.

A boost for regional and global operators

DC BLOX’s investment has also been welcomed by local officials as a driver of economic growth and technological advancement.

“The continued growth of DC BLOX in our community is the vision presented by their leadership in 2021. DC BLOX is an extraordinary company committed to providing technology services and community partnerships as promised,” says Sandy Davis, President and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation.

“We are excited to have DC BLOX expand in Horry County and to house the largest facility of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard in our county. Congratulations to the DC BLOX team and thank you for choosing Horry County as your home.”

Once completed, the combined MYR1 and MYR2 facilities will be capable of supporting up to ten subsea cables. The expansion will solidify Myrtle Beach’s position as a major interconnection point for international data routes, providing essential diversity to traditional landing sites such as Miami and Virginia Beach.

A boost for telcos

For telecom operators, the Myrtle Beach expansion represents an important opportunity to strengthen backbone infrastructure and reduce latency between continents.

As subsea cables form the foundation of global data transport, the additional capacity from DC BLOX will enable carriers to meet the needs of growing data traffic from 5G networks, enterprise cloud applications and edge deployments.

The enhanced connectivity will also improve route redundancy, allowing telcos to offer more resilient services to customers and enterprises across North America, Europe and beyond.

In addition, by providing interconnection with hyperscale data centres and cloud service providers, DC BLOX’s facilities create new opportunities for carriers to deliver value-added services and participate in the evolving global data ecosystem.

Positioning the US Southeast as a global hub

Pending demand, the new MYR2 facility will be constructed adjacent to MYR1 within ITAP. Its location offers an optimal coastal environment for subsea infrastructure while maintaining proximity to regional fibre networks and power capacity.

The expansion reflects a growing trend in the data centre industry toward regional diversification of subsea landing points.

By creating additional capacity in the US Southeast, DC BLOX is helping to distribute international connectivity more evenly along the Eastern Seaboard, reducing congestion at traditional landing sites and improving overall network resilience.

As global data volumes continue to rise, the Myrtle Beach cable landing expansion represents a key step in strengthening the digital backbone of the US and enhancing its connectivity with the rest of the world.

With MYR2, DC BLOX is not only advancing its own infrastructure footprint but also enabling the next phase of growth for cloud, telco and digital service ecosystems across the region.
