Eaton's US$340m Investment Boosts US Transformer Production
By adding a third US manufacturing facility for three-phase transformers, manufacturing company Eaton is committing to growing the market.
The company is eager to address the critical shortage of transformers and record demand for its solutions across utility, large commercial, industrial and data centre customers. With this in mind, it has invested US$340m to increase US production of its three-phase transformers.
These transformers provide critical access to reliable electrical power.
Production and hiring at Eaton’s new facility in Jonesville, North Carolina in the US is expected to begin in 2027 and promises 700 new jobs at the site. This brings Eaton’s total investments in North American manufacturing for electrical solutions to more than US$1bn since 2023.
“Electrical power demand is increasing dramatically, and our solutions are at the heart of energy systems everywhere, from the utility grid to industrials, data centres, buildings and more,” says Mike Yelton, President, Americas Region, Electrical Sector at Eaton.
“We’re grateful for the strong collaboration and support in South Carolina, where we have a long history of manufacturing and innovation. Eaton is continuing to increase production and add jobs there and across the U.S. to support affordable, reliable and clean energy.”
Supporting community with industrial growth
Eaton transformers are designed to meet the highest efficiency standards in the industry. They work to not only help businesses innovative in their facility, but also support them in lowering energy and costs.
Building on more than a century of transformer innovation and manufacturing, Eaton will be converting its existing Jonesville facility into a state-of-the-art manufacturing site for three-phase transformers.
The project is supported by local, state and federal economic development incentives and Eaton is also working closely with readySC and regional schools to support hiring and industry training.
“Eaton’s new operation in Union County represents a major vote of confidence in South Carolina’s highly skilled, world-class workforce,” comments South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
“This investment is a remarkable milestone for Eaton and Union County, and we celebrate the opportunities it will create throughout the state in the years ahead.”
Creating a manufacturing hub
Eaton will also continue to manufacture three-phase transformers in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Additionally, it will continue to produce single-phase, pole-mount and pad-mount transformers in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Since 2023, Eaton has invested more than US$1bn in its North American manufacturing for electrical solutions.
The company is also increasing supplies of power distribution solutions, including transformers and voltage regulators, in addition to electrical assemblies, switchgear, switchboards and circuit breakers and solutions supporting electric grid infrastructure projects.
Dedicated to making products for data centres and critical manufacturing sectors, Eaton is committed to operating sustainably. Its solutions are designed to be efficient in every sense of the word to help its customers commit to their net zero goals.
With the support of global companies like Eaton, South Carolina is aiming to set the gold standard as a competitive and business-friendly state in the US. With a growing workforce, and companies like Eaton looking to invest, the state hopes these innovations will have a positive impact and spark future growth.
“South Carolina is a leader in manufacturing due to our talented workforce, quality of life and business environment. I welcome Eaton’s investment in Union County, further ensuring our state remains on the forefront of grid modernisation,” says US Senator Lindsey Graham.
US Senator Tim Scott adds: “Eaton’s investment and expansion will create more job opportunities for the community and stimulate our local economy. I am glad South Carolina continues to be a hotbed for economic growth and a leading force in energy.”
