Hyundai Motor Group is partnering with Equinix to enhance in-car systems, expanding its HCloud platform to support connected car service users worldwide

Leading automotive manufacturer Hyundai has announced that it will be collaborating with Equinix to enhance its in-car systems.

Hyundai’s solution, referred to as HCloud, is a multi-cloud solution designed to offer cutting-edge, real-time processing, user customisation and in-car connectivity worldwide. It is part of a wider transition for Hyundai as it pivots towards software-defined vehicles that can enhance connectivity for customers, giving them an experience that is safer and more personalised.

HCloud has been implemented across Equinix data centres spanning facilities in Asia, North America and Europe as part of a strategy to enhance data processing capabilities for subscribers.

Equinix was chosen as a partner given its ability to offer scalability and unparalleled access to other cloud services.

“By leveraging Equinix's global data centres, we are providing high-quality connected car service and improving user experience through reduced latency, stable global connectivity and enhanced scalability of our HCloud platform,” says Youngjoo Han, Vice President and Head of IT Infra Center at Hyundai Motor Group.

Improving user experience with data centre connectivity

The Hyundai Motor Group Connected Car Services Platform was developed in response to the growing demand for real-time data processing, seamless connectivity and scalable infrastructure, which the company says has been driven by rapid advancements in connected and autonomous vehicles.

These upgrades will benefit more than 10 million customers, with the Group positioning HCloud within International Business Exchange (IBX) data centres operated by Equinix in Seoul, Los Angeles and Frankfurt.

These locations were selected for their proximity to cloud and network ecosystems that support the company's connected car services, which launched in 2003.

With this in mind, Hyundai hopes to double its global subscriber count by 2026.

The platform delivers in-car infotainment and mobile applications through wireless networks for the Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis brands.

Youngjoo adds: “The partnership with Equinix is taking us a step closer to becoming the global leader in connected car services. We look forward to continuing this journey with Equinix to sustain the momentum of our growing connected car ecosystem worldwide.”

Supporting a multicloud architecture

This rollout is harnessing Equinix Fabric to connect HCloud with multiple public cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS)

The hybrid multicloud architecture aims to facilitate global service rollout while maintaining connectivity standards and reducing latency for users.

How Equinix supports its customers

With market research indicating that 95% of new vehicles will feature connectivity by 2030, there is a much greater need for distributed data processing capabilities in order to meet growing customer expectations.

By using Equinix data centres, Hyundai has already reported an improvement in application responsiveness and remote service quality. Likewise, its infrastructure supports the automotive company in its transition towards vehicles that are defined by software.

“The future of the automotive industry lies in connected cars. Through a hybrid multicloud infrastructure, auto manufacturers can take advantage of cloud services while maintaining the flexibility to choose between secure, dedicated colocation infrastructure and highly scalable cloud services for each workload they support,” explains Chris Jang, Managing Director at Equinix Korea.

He adds: “Equinix, with its global footprint, offers not only the necessary infrastructure but also an interconnected digital ecosystem and network-dense infrastructure. This can enable Korean companies, including Hyundai Motor, to accelerate their digital transformation and optimise the customer experience.”

A partnership like this demonstrates how essential data centres are, particularly as cars and autonomous vehicle systems become more intuitive. For Hyundai Motor Group, having Equinix as a partner supports the expansion of its infrastructure strategy to support cars that are even more digitally sophisticated.

Youngjoo adds: “The partnership with Equinix is taking us a step closer to becoming the global leader in connected car services.

“We look forward to continuing this journey with Equinix to sustain the momentum of our growing connected car ecosystem worldwide.”
