NexGen Cloud lands US$45m Series A to scale data centre infrastructure across Europe, supporting sovereign AI growth amid rising technology demand

As the race for AI dominance heats up across global markets, NexGen Cloud – a UK-headquartered technology provider – secures US$45 million in Series A funding to strengthen Europe’s sovereign AI infrastructure.

The firm’s mission is clear: ensure that AI innovation across the continent is no longer dependent on US-based hyperscalers by investing in localised data centre capabilities built specifically for AI performance, scale and data security.

With this funding, NexGen Cloud sets out to meet the region’s growing demand for high-performance AI computing, aiming to build infrastructure that can rival, and even exceed, offerings found in the US.

The focus is on sovereignty, enabling organisations and governments to retain control over data and AI technologies while remaining compliant with stringent regional regulations.

Building sovereign AI through next-gen data centres

Sovereign AI refers to a government’s or organisation’s ownership and control of its AI technology and data.

It ensures that critical AI workloads remain within jurisdictional boundaries, enhancing privacy, regulatory compliance and technological independence.

According to Nvidia: "The global imperative for nations to invest in sovereign AI capabilities has grown since the rise of generative AI, which is reshaping markets, challenging governance models, inspiring new industries and transforming others — from gaming to biopharma.

"It’s also rewriting the nature of work, as people in many fields start using AI-powered copilots.”

With sovereign AI emerging as a core pillar of national technology strategies, NexGen Cloud has placed data centres at the heart of its expansion.

It partners with what it calls some of the most advanced data centres in the world, chosen specifically for their ability to support scalable AI infrastructure.

NexGen Cloud’s technology stack includes Hyperstack — an on-demand GPU cloud platform launched in September 2023.

Designed to support dynamic AI workloads, it delivers enterprise-grade GPU access through a responsive, scalable environment.

Since launch, Hyperstack has seen a 2272% increase in transactions year-on-year, generating £72m (US$93m) in revenue across 2023 and 2024.

This performance reflects a clear trend: organisations are seeking more agile, localised alternatives to traditional cloud providers for running AI workloads.

NexGen Cloud’s technological edge in sustainable AI

Founded in 2020, NexGen Cloud is distinguished by its commitment to sustainability and data sovereignty.

All of its infrastructure runs on 100% renewable energy, setting it apart from competitors in the AI infrastructure space.

The company also maintains Preferred CSP Partner status with Nvidia in Europe — an endorsement of its technical expertise and alignment with the broader AI ecosystem.

At the core of its strategy is the AI Supercloud, a bespoke environment designed to support large-scale AI projects.

The company also plans to introduce Full Stack Cloud capabilities, targeting enterprise-grade deployments.

This includes services like Fine-Tuning-as-a-Service – a solution that lets clients customise pre-trained models using optimised GPU clusters – and advanced serverless inference running on dedicated virtual machines.

These services address common challenges around model customisation, GPU allocation and data privacy.

Chris Starkey, CEO of NexGen Cloud, says: “For too long, Europe — and particularly the UK — has been overshadowed in technological innovation. Our exceptional talent pool, despite being among the world’s finest, has limited access to critical computing resources in the region.

"Europe is experiencing a brain drain in tech precisely because of these limitations — large US-based hyperscalers have historically dictated the pace of innovation — and Europe is currently a step behind.

Chris Starkey, CEO of NexGen Cloud

“NexGen Cloud is changing that narrative — this isn’t just about staying current, it’s about setting the pace. For the first time, European entities will have access to the most advanced and performant computing resources necessary to drive their innovations at a competitive, if not superior, pace compared to their US counterparts.

“This milestone is not merely about upgrading our technology – it’s about rewriting the rules of the game.”

Series A funding to scale AI-first infrastructure

The Series A raise, supported largely by high-net-worth individuals and family trusts, enables NexGen Cloud to scale its data centre capacity while ensuring Europe’s AI demands are met with performance and compliance in mind.

As part of its roadmap, the company is prioritising infrastructure development to enable AI production-readiness at scale. This means building out data centre networks optimised for AI workloads — from fine-tuning large language models to deploying inference engines in privacy-sensitive environments.

Chris Starkey, CEO of NexGen Cloud

Chris adds: “We are thrilled to have the backing of our esteemed investors who share our vision for a robust and sovereign AI infrastructure in Europe.

"This Series A funding is a pivotal step towards realising our goal of becoming the backbone for AI-powered solutions across the continent.”

With this investment, NexGen Cloud strengthens its position in the data centre technology market, providing the tools and compute power needed to support Europe’s digital evolution.

In an environment where control over data and infrastructure is increasingly linked to innovation, NexGen Cloud’s approach positions it as both a regional enabler and a long-term player in AI infrastructure.

As AI adoption accelerates across industries, sovereign control over compute capacity and data becomes not just a regulatory concern but a competitive necessity.

NexGen Cloud's investment reflects this shift — and as demand continues to grow, its focus on sustainable, high-performance infrastructure puts it in a strong position to shape the next phase of Europe’s AI journey.
