We take a look at 10 countries with the most data centres

Data centres are a large group of networked computer servers typically used by organisations for the remote storage, processing, or distribution of large amounts of data. Digital transformation, cloud adoption and hybrid working are just a few of the many reasons why the industry is growing at a rapid pace. We take a look at the top 10 countries with the most data centres right now. 


10. Russia 

Russia is home to 172 data centres spread across the country. Most data centres are located in the city Moscow. Russia's biggest data centres are Selectel, Rostelecom, Datahouse, RTCOMM, and Data Harbour. 

9. Japan

Japan has 207 data centres in total. Over half of the data centres in Japan are located in the city of Tokyo. The country has over 116.57 million internet users. The top data centres are Equinix, KDDI, TIS, Arteria and NTT Communications. 

8. France

France houses a total of 328 data centres, most of which are located in the cities Paris and Lille. 4.2% of France's GDP comes from the digital economy. The top data centres in France are Cogent Communications, Colt Technology Services, IBM, Interxion and CenterServ.

7. Canada

Across the country of Canada there are a total of 328 data centres. Around 100 of these data centres are located in Toronto and another around another 50 are based in the city Montreal. The top data centres in Canada are Cologix, Rogers Communications, Bell, Aptum and TNW Networks.

6. Australia

There are around 287 in Australia. In Australia there are over 20.28 million internet users. The biggest data centres are Telstra, Equinix, AAPT, Vocus Communications and NEXTDC. 27 data centres are based in the city of Sydney.

5. Netherlands

In the Netherlands there are 281 data centres across the country. The top data centres within the Netherlands are Cellnex Telecom, KPN, Equinix, Interxion and NorthC Datacenters. 

4. China

China is home to a total of 443 data centres. Shanghai, Shenzheh and Hong Kong hold the majority of the Chinese data centres. The biggest data centres in the country are SH1, BJ1, Colt Hong Kong HKDC1, AirTrunk Hong Kong HKG1,  iAdvantage TKO MEGA Plus. The largest data centre in China is over 900 square foot.

3. UK

The UK houses 456 data centres in total, 70 of which are based in the country's capital city, London. Some of the biggest data centres in the UK are The KAO Data Campus, Next Generation Data Centre, GTP 3 Data Centre, Telehouse North, and VIRTUS Data Centre. 

2. Germany

Across Germany there are around 487 data centres. Data centres in Germany are spread across 42 different locations and over 50 centres are based in the city of Falkenstein. The top 5 data centres in the country are euNetworks, GTT Communications, Colt Technology Services, CenturyLink and Interxion.

1. U.S.

The U.S. has the most data centres  in the world, the country has 2701 in total. 153 of the data centres  are located in Dallas, there 147 in both Los Angeles and Bay Area. Across all 50 states in the U.S. there are data centres located in 1826 different areas. The top data centres are CenturyLink, Verizon, Digital Realty, AT&T and Equinix.
