Exclusive Video: Digital Infrastructure Trends in 2023
Discussing Cloud Sustainability Matt Bamforth, Senior Consultant, STL Partners provided his insights and experiences on the topic from over the last decade at Data Centre LIVE 2023.
In his whistle-stop 20-minute keynote, Bamforth gave the virtual audience insights into emerging technologies and best practices for building and maintaining agile, scalable and secure digital infrastructure.
Digital Infrastructure Trends in 2023 with Matt Bamforth
Bamforth’s core responsibilities at STL Partners includes working in TMT with a focus on edge computing. He has been with the consultancy since 2020.
Projecting how the industry may change in the future, Bamforth touched on three major trends - strong growth in the Southeast Asian data centre market, continued sustainability investment in data centres and consolidation in the UK fibre market.
“Data centre capacity is just becoming more distributed globally as the demand for edge grows,” he explained when discussing the growing trend of edge computing. “There are applications that need the edge, whether this is a lower latency for self-driving cars or for VR headsets, or whether it's just reducing the amount of backhaul for video analytics and things like that. The edge is very much needed, the demand is growing and this means more distribution.”
Fielding questions from the audience, he highlighted what he thinks are the key priorities for data centre providers when it comes to building and maintaining digital infrastructure.
“It depends if it's going to be a greenfield or a brownfield infrastructure project,” he explained. “What we've seen with a lot of the brownfield data centres is that they weren't necessarily built with sustainability in mind. And this is why that's quite a big role for startups. They can come in and try and help data centres to become more sustainable, to become more energy efficient.
“With a greenfield site, it's increasingly likely now that you're not going to have a new data centre built which doesn't have this in mind. It's incredibly important. I think a massive priority beyond those which have been in mind before now when building data centres, it's that sustainability part.”
He concluded on the sustainability topic - one heavily discussed at Data Centre LIVE - adding that if smaller data centre operators are looking to be acquired in future, “they have to make sure that sustainability is at the heart of what they do”.
