Partnership to expand Sines’ internet exchange services

The Sines sustainable hyperscaler data centre campus will host the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem on the planet, Start Campus says

Start Campus, which develops 100% green energy ecosystems, has shared that its Sines, Portugal, campus will soon be the home of DE-CIX.

“We are excited to welcome DE-CIX to Start Campus and to offer our customers an industry-leading IX solution that will keep traffic location, while routing data more efficiently across the footprint interconnected network of DE-CIX, which covers several metropolitan regions, continents and hundreds of data centres”, Fabiola Bordino, Director of Sustainability, Communication and Marketing at Start Campus said. “As we build the first 100% sustainable data centre campus powered by 24/7 renewable energy sector, companies like DE-CIX are essential to allow ease of interconnection and reach exemplifies our mission to create a robust digital ecosystem for benefit the sector and our local market.”

SINES Project in Portugal

Start Campus's 100% sustainable data centre campus SINES is powered by 24/7 renewable energy.

Earlier in September, Start Campus announced it is to use Nautilus Data Technologiesriver cooling technology after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to utilise the technology. The pioneering water-cooling technology is set to elevate energy efficiencies and cooling capabilities at this emerging Atlantic Hub. Nautilus’ pioneering zero-water consuming cooling system,  patented technology proven to elevate energy efficiency and cooling capabilities, will be implemented across multiple phases of the project.

Who is DE-CIX?

DE-CIX is a German operator of carrier- and data-centre-neutral Internet Exchanges, with operations across Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia. The company also houses the largest ecosystem of neutral interconnection of operators and data centres globally, it says.

DE-CIX offers interconnection services in 50 metropolitan markets, accessible in more than 600 cities worldwide. DE-CIX in Frankfurt is one of the largest internet exchanges in the world, with a data volume of almost 34 Exabytes per year from 2022 and around 1100 networks connected.

The company is expanding its IX presence in Southern Europe with a new Point of Presence (PoP) at Start Campus' Project SINES.

“DE-CIX is excited to help usher in a new era of connectivity across Sines, Portugal, with Start Campus’ SINES project”, Theresa Bobis, DE-CIX Regional Director for Southern Europe said. “Sines will be home to several submarine systems that interconnect and serve Southern Europe, together with the largest proximity and reach to Africa and other European markets, DE-CIX is excited to expand its presence in Southern Europe to Sines, strengthening connectivity for Portugal and beyond.”

The SINES project will be the location of a future access point for DE-CIX Lisbon, with direct connectivity to other IXs of DE-CIX in Southern Europe, including the likes of Madrid, Barcelona and Marseille. When services are operational in 2024, SINES will emerge as a connectivity hub key intercontinental network and an important exchange point for data traffic to and from

Europe, North America, South America and Africa by harnessing Sines’ has a unique position in the extreme southwest of Europe.

Smart Campus’ sustainability commitments

Founded in 2020, Smart Campus is working to be carbon neutral in its operations by 2025, and to be fully carbon-free by 2028.

Smart Campus’ SINES Project benefits from zero-consumption ocean water cooling systems, access to the high voltage power grid, connectivity through high-capacity international fibre optic cables throughout Europe, the Americas, and Africa.

Situated on repurposed industrial land less than 150km from Lisbon, plans for the facility were announced in 2021 by Start Campus, which is owned by American firm Davidson Kempner and Pioneer Point Partners, based in the UK.

Its strategic location offers the connection point of four continents by fibre optic networks, 100% renewable and competitive energy 24/7, and repurposed ocean water facilities for no water-consumption cooling, which Start Campus says provides a state-of-the-art ecosystem.
