Schneider Electric’s devotion to bees and biodiversity

Industry leader, Schneider Electric, has renewed its commitment to protecting bees with its third year of partnership in DCs for Bees initiative

Schneider Electric, the global leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, has once again reaffirmed its commitment to protecting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity in Ireland through its participation in the DCs for Bees initiative.

For the third consecutive year, Schneider Electric will join forces with Host In Ireland, a leading data centre provider, to plant more than 2500 trees across Ireland, creating valuable habitats for bees and other endangered pollinators.

The buzz around the initiative

The DCs for Bees initiative aims to address the alarming decline in Ireland's bee populations, which are essential for agriculture and the overall health of ecosystems. The project focuses on planting fruit trees which provide crucial food sources for bees during their active season.

The initiative is a collaborative effort that brings together data centre providers, businesses, and community organisations to address the decline of bee populations. By supporting the creation of pollinator-friendly habitats, the initiative contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and ensures the long-term health of ecosystems.

Schneider Electric's unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental protection is evident in its ongoing initiatives across the globe. The company is committed to reducing its environmental footprint, promoting renewable energy sources, and fostering a circular economy. Through its involvement in projects like DCs for Bees, Schneider Electric is demonstrating its dedication to creating a sustainable future for all.

Collaboration to increase pollination

In a collaborative effort to safeguard bees, increase pollination, and foster biodiversity, Schneider Electric has joined forces with 73 other companies to plant a staggering 3,587 mixed fruit orchards across Ireland. These orchards, filled with vibrant flowers and teeming with buzzing bees, are transforming landscapes and providing vital habitats for pollinators.

To date, 222 schools and colleges and 171 community groups, including tidy towns, retirement homes, community centres, and local sports facilities, have received and planted orchards within their communities. The initiative's impact is evident in the lush greenery and thriving biodiversity that now grace Ireland's cities and towns.

In 2023 alone, Schneider Electric sponsored an additional 100 orchards, each boasting a trio of apple trees, a plum tree, and a pear tree. Thirty-four of these orchards have been adopted by Schneider Electric employees, while the remaining 66 have been gifted to communities that have wholeheartedly embraced the initiative.

Connecting people with nature

“Orchards are a focal point for communities to connect people with nature. Growing orchards in the community helps raise awareness of our connection to our food sources and play an important role in biodiversity and the plight of bees in Ireland,” says Garry Connolly, founder, Host in Ireland.

“That spirit of community is alive and well with ‘Orchards in the Community’ as organisations like Schneider Electric come together with biodiversity groups, schools, colleges, Tidy Towns and others across Ireland to tackle challenges like biodiversity loss to save Ireland’s pollinators.”

“We’re proud to once again be partnering with Host Ireland and sponsoring the Orchards in the Community initiative and increase our support for its leading sustainability initiative,” explains Mark Yeeles, VP, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric UK and Ireland.

“Driving sustainable change which can be seen within the community is at the heart of our organisation, and we hope the orchards will create holistic ecosystems which will be beneficial for many years and generations to come”.
