Energy challenges? Discover how Western PA’s abundant natural gas resources and unique infrastructure set the gold standard for powering data centres

The data centre industry continues to face mounting pressure from escalating energy demands driven by AI and other power-intensive applications. With the US energy grid nearing capacity, the need for robust and dependable energy infrastructure has become crucial for operators.

Pittsburgh, long a leader in energy solutions, is uniquely positioned to deliver the power needed to drive the data centre industry to new heights. The Western Pennsylvania region offers a strategic combination of abundant resources, established infrastructure, and innovative energy solutions, making it an increasingly attractive destination for data centre investments.

Unlocking efficiency

A standout example of the region’s readiness to meet industry needs is the transformation of the Homer City Generating Station. Formerly Pennsylvania’s largest coal-fired power plant, the site is being redeveloped into a state-of-the-art, US$10bn natural gas-powered data centre campus.

Utilising existing infrastructure like transmission lines and substations from the original plant, this project significantly accelerates timelines and reinforces Western Pennsylvania’s leadership in energy innovation.

When operational, the campus will feature seven gas-fired turbines generating up to 4.5 gigawatts of electricity, making it one of the nation’s largest power generation facilities. This scale and efficiency places Western Pennsylvania firmly on the map as a hub for data centre growth.

Central to these advancements is the region’s proximity to the Marcellus Shale, which delivers a 100+ year supply of natural gas through decades of technological advancements.

Peoples Natural Gas, a regulated utility with more than 700,000 Western Pennsylvania customers, plays a vital role in harnessing this abundant resource. A key piece of Essential Utilities (WTRG), Peoples is Pennsylvania’s largest gas utility with a legacy dating back 140 years.

Peoples offers scalable, sustainable solutions tailored to the needs of data centres. Its extensive infrastructure, spanning 15,000 miles, ensures seamless energy delivery and dependable pricing, minimizing delays and accelerating go-to market timelines.

Beyond reliability, Peoples brings expertise in customised energy transformations, from building microgrids to supporting direct energy supply for high-performance computing.

Shaping the technology of tomorrow

Another compelling example of Pittsburgh’s innovative energy potential is the microgrid powering Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). This off-grid solution, one of several built by Peoples, integrates natural gas with supplemental renewables, creating a localised and resilient system for uninterrupted energy supply.

Now operated by Cordia, a close partner to Peoples, the PIT microgrid serves as a global model for reliable, sustainable energy.

An all-of-the-above approach that combines natural gas and renewables has few peers in delivering affordable, reliable and resilient energy while helping meet sustainability goals. Data centre operators see this model as a blueprint for scalable, cost-effective solutions that will power the AI revolution, reducing reliance on strained grid resources.

Western Pennsylvania plays a pivotal role in shaping the technologies of tomorrow. Developments like the Homer City campus and PIT microgrid showcase the region’s capacity for innovation and resilience, solidifying its position as a centre of excellence for energy and infrastructure.

Add in its mild climate, position atop the Marcellus Shale and abundant water supplies and it’s easy to see why Pittsburgh was identified as the market with the shortest lead time to power hyperscale data centres by TD Cowen.

With strategic investments and actions, Western Pennsylvania is ready to lead the next era of data centre development, combining reliability, sustainability and progress.
