Apto leads hyperscale data centre development

New data centre company, Apto, has positioned itself to lead the development of the next wave of hyperscale data centres in the European economy

Apto, a visionary data centre company delivering world-class hyperscale data centres across Europe, has announced its official launch.

With a mission to lead the next wave of the digital economy, Apto is aiming to partner with leading cloud service providers to facilitate its expansion across the continent. The company will work to build and operate data centres for providers that are expanding into Europe, as well as managing PIMCO’s data centre assets.

As the demand for data continues to boom in 2023, hyperscaling is increasing as a result. Hyperscale data centres are designed to not only be very efficient, but also more sustainable by using renewable energy sources and advanced cooling technologies.

Built-to-suit hyperscale data centres: Apto’s customer focus

Apto has ultimately been formed to develop and operate the European data centre assets of global investment manager, PIMCO. Apto will benefit from access to scale, resources and land sourcing capabilities of one of the largest European real estate platforms.

The company can offer more than a century of combined experience in designing, constructing and operating data centres at scale and is guided by a leadership team with insights drawn from the world’s digital and data centre figureheads.

With its perspective, Apto aims to serve cloud service providers in a customised way. Its service delivery revolves entirely around customer needs - to deliver built-to-suit hyperscale data centres in prime locations where they need them.

In addition, Apto’s practical experience in streamlining construction processes, as well as a proven design blueprint, grounded in operational excellence and regulatory best practices, aims to ensure not only speed-to-market but also greater quality.

Russell Poole, former Managing Director of Equinix UK and appointed CEO of Apto, says: “Apto’s core mission is to enable swift and seamless entry into markets primed to shape future demand in Europe. Our experienced leadership team, combined with PIMCO’s premier real estate expertise and access to significant capital sets us apart in delivering this capability.

“Apto is not just a company; it's a promise to partner with the world’s largest hyperscalers as they build out the next wave of Europe’s fast-growing digital economy.”

The importance of sustainability in data centre construction

Data Centre Magazine has previously reported on how data centres are currently responsible for 1.5% of global energy consumption and is expected to reach 8% by 2030. As technologies become more supercharged, it is important for companies to conserve energy where possible and take sustainability into account.

With its leadership team holding vast amounts of experience, Apto is positioned to adapt to customer needs and leverage connections and delivery capability. Its goal is to steer them towards sustainable success and ultimately work to lead in digital evolution.

Roger Gough, CDO of Apto, says: “We’re passionate about designing safe, sustainable data centres that meet the specific demands of our customers. Our goal is to foster an industry-leading team that embodies Apto’s customer-centric culture, always keeping customers at the core of what we do.”
