The Strategy Behind NTT DATA’s Gigawatt-Scale Expansion

NTT Data has acquired land across seven markets to support nearly a gigawatt of planned data centre capacity, as part of the company's previously announced US$10bn expansion plans until 2027.
The company has confirmed that over the past six months it has secured sites across North America, Europe and Asia to meet growing enterprise demand for high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.
These land acquisitions follow a period of construction for NTT Data, with the company having opened 10 new data centres worldwide within the past year. These facilities have added more than 370MW of new IT capacity.
“By bringing new capacity to high-growth regions, we're building the foundation enterprises need to innovate, scale and lead confidently in an AI-driven economy,” says Doug Adams, CEO and President, Global Data Centers at NTT Data.
Entering new markets and expanding existing ones
The company will establish new operations in Milan to meet demand for hyperscale and AI-ready infrastructure across Southern Europe. The 53-acre site will house a facility with 128MW of capacity, marking its first entry into this market.
Furthermore, NTT Data has also acquired 32 acres in the Tochigi Inter Industrial Park near Tokyo, where it plans to construct two high-capacity data centres totalling roughly 100MW.
Having an already-established presence in Tokyo, NTT Data has also secured eight acres in Osaka to develop two data centres with a combined capacity of 36MW. The first facility is scheduled to open in FY2027 and will bring NTT DATA’s total data centre count in the Osaka region to three facilities with a combined capacity of approximately 70MW.
Doug adds: “With the backing of our parent company, we are uniquely positioned to be able to invest and build proactively, ahead of market demand, delivering the resilient, sustainable infrastructure our clients need to succeed, while staying ahead of industry shifts.”
In North America, NTT Data is expanding its presence in the US. In Hillsboro, Oregon, the company has acquired additional land to expand its footprint in a region strategically located within the Pacific Northwest technology corridor.
The new site will add 216MW of capacity to NTT DATA's existing Hillsboro presence, bringing the company's total planned capacity in the Hillsboro market to 354MW.
What’s unique about this location is that it plans to offer direct connectivity to Asia via NTT’s subsea connect network. This aims to position the site as a key transit point for international data traffic – something essential as demands for connectivity continue to surge.
Likewise in Phoenix, Arizona, NTT Data has acquired 174 acres in Mesa to develop a new multi-data centre campus. Already operating in Phoenix, the additional development will consist of seven planned facilities with an anticipated capacity of 324MW. The first data centre is scheduled to open in FY2028.
Strengthening its presence in Europe via new acquisitions
NTT Data also plans to expand its European presence by establishing new data centres in London, UK and Frankfurt, Germany.
Securing 26.3 acres of land for a new planned site in London (LON2), the company hopes to strengthen its position in one of the world’s most active colocation markets. This will also be NTT Data’s eighth facility in the London area.
Additionally in Frankfurt, NTT Data is working to expand its presence in Germany. With the city being home to some of the world’s largest technology companies and internet exchanges, its new facility will be NTT Data’s fifth site in the area and is expected to offer an additional 80MW of capacity.
Frankfurt continues to be a critical location for hyperscalers requiring high-capacity infrastructure, NTT Data is one of the companies that help the city in being a critical hub for data traffic across continental Europe.
The company already has a strong presence in Germany and also operates multiple data centres in Berlin. These expansion efforts were also part of NTT Data’s US$10bn global investment, with the company continuing to commit to meet growing demands for data usage and computation, particularly as it expands its use of generative AI (Gen AI).
Likewise, the company aims to achieve net zero emissions across all its operations by 2030, which includes sourcing 100% renewable energy.
“Our land acquisitions are about more than growth; they're about shaping the future of digital infrastructure on a global scale,” Doug adds.
“As the digital landscape evolves at unprecedented speed, NTT Global Data Centers is investing boldly to ensure our customers are ready to lead in an increasingly connected and dynamic world.”
