Vertiv to incorporate the ZincFive BC Series uninterruptible power supply battery cabinets into its range of battery systems, for data centre backup power

Vertiv has shared that it will add the ZincFive BC Series uninterruptible power supply (UPS) Battery Cabinets to its portfolio of battery systems, which will be made available for data centre backup power. Vertiv is a provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, while ZincFive is a nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery-based solution manufacturer for immediate power applications.

The nickel-zinc batteries are safe, recyclable and compatible with select large and medium Vertiv UPS systems, including the new Vertiv Trinergy. They are a source of backup energy storage, which supports Vertiv’s dedication to its customers and their desires to minimise the environmental footprint of their data centre sites.

Data Centres industry’s first nickel-zinc energy storage solution

Vertiv has been committed to powering and cooling data for more than five decades. Headquartered in Ohio, United States, Vertiv has more than 27,000 employees worldwide and does business in more than 130 countries across 23 manufacturing and assembly facilities.

The company has a broad range of cooling solutions, including liquid cooling to enable higher chilled water, supply air and secondary inlet temperatures that can maximise the efficiency of data centre facility infrastructure.

In order to better support the sustainable goals of its customers, Vertiv also introduced Vertiv TimberMod in 2023 - a ground-breaking variant of its Vertiv Power Module and SmartMod families designed to utilise mass timber instead of steel to build prefabricated modular (PFM) data centre solutions.

With these new developments, Vertiv’s goal is to pioneer environmentally friendly materials that can minimise resource depletion and reduce CO2 emissions. ZincFive’s BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets are the first nickel-zinc battery energy storage solution with backward and forward compatibility with megawatt class UPS. The batteries have the smallest carbon footprint in the industry, as well as low maintenance requirements.

"Our relentless commitment to innovation shines through our powerful, safe, and reliable nickel-zinc battery technology,” explained Tim Hysell, ZincFive's CEO and Co-Founder. “The BC Series represents an ideal solution to meet the evolving demands of data centres, both today and in the future. Furthermore, the importance of sustainability in data centre backup battery systems is on the rise, aligning perfectly with the shared values of ZincFive, our partners, and our customers. We are dedicated to minimising carbon emissions and operational expenses without compromising on safety or performance."

“Vertiv and ZincFive want to enable reliable and efficiently operated data centres around the world, providing greater access to data, with less waste and greater energy efficiency,” said Milind Paranjape, Vertiv senior director of Energy Storage. “Vertiv has already deployed the ZincFive product at several sites for major data centre companies.”

The ZincFive BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets are now available from Vertiv across North America and Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Vertiv to provide high-efficiency chilled water cooling solutions in Sweden

Vertiv recently entered into a contract with Swedish data centre company EcoDataCenter, to provide high-efficiency chilled water cooling solutions for its new facilities being built in Falun, Sweden.

Chilled water cooling systems manage heat generated by servers, by circulating the water through a network of pipes which absorb heat. This helps to maintain optimal operating temperatures and prevent overheating, as discussed in our Top 10: 'Coolest' Cooling Companies.
