AWS Plans Major Data Centre Expansion in Hyderabad, India
Amazon Web Services (AWS) aims to expand its data centre operations in Telangana, India. A meeting has taken place between the Chief Minister of the State of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, and AWS’ Vice President, Kerry Person, to explore the potential for future investments into AWS infrastructure. Person said that he was excited for the opportunity to expand in Hyderabad and support Indian customers on their digital journeys and AI transformation.
AWS plans major expansion in Hyderabad
Amazon, based in Washington DC, USA, has a market capital of US$1.89trn and a workforce of 1.5m worldwide. Amazon already has a strong presence in Telangana, which includes their largest corporate building in the world. Amazon also launched its dedicated air cargo network ‘Amazon Air’, in the city in 2023.
Hyderabad, which is the capital of the Indian state of Telangana, is in desperate need of data centres. Western Hyderabad also goes by ‘Cyberabad’, due to the presence of Hyderabad Information Technology and Engineering Consultancy City (HITEC City), an IT park which houses offices for Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook and Oracle.
As a result, it’s only natural that Hyderabad has become a core data centre location in India, which is also driven by the government's support for digital infrastructure.
IT and Industries Minister, D. Sridhar Babu, previously met the Amazon team in California, where he encouraged Amazon’s senior leadership to further explore their data centre operations across Telangana. AWS shared its interest in expanding its data centre facilities and workforce in the city.
“AWS has designated Hyderabad as a strategic region and three big data centres are already operational,” said Sridhar. “They shared plans for further expanding their business, including a new hyper-scale data centre in Hyderabad that are critical for AI/ML enabled services.”
Sridhar went on to say that he assured AWS that the company would provide the best incentives and complete support to make their goals in Hyderabad successful.
“We expect a huge expansion of their presence in our State,” he said.
AWS to boost cloud infrastructure in Hyderabad with significant investments and community initiatives
Kerry shared that he was hoping to further expand AWS’ cloud infrastructure across Hyderabad, as an integral component of AWS’s strategy for India.
“When we launched the AWS region in Hyderabad in 2022, we announced plans to invest US$4.4bn into the Region by 2030. This is estimated to support an average of more than 48,000 full-time jobs annually (2022-2030) and contribute US$7.6bn to India’s gross domestic product by 2030,” Kerry explained.
Beyond direct investments and jobs, AWS has continued to make a positive difference in communities across Hyderabad. In Telangana, AWS has renovated:
- 12 rural child care centres
- 10 government-run schools
- Several health centres
- 11 rural libraries
- 10 Think Big Spaces (STEAM labs) in schools.
“Having personally visited some of the schools our InCommunities team has helped to rebuild, I’m very proud of the work our teams have done to make a difference for the next generation of students in the region,” Kerry said proudly. “Amazon provides a range of cloud business services including computing, storage, databases, networking, machine learning, analytics and other services, which will now also include AI.”
