The journey away from legacy data centres is rarely straightforward.

That rings especially true for organisations operating across multiple countries and managing vast volumes of business-critical data.

Yet for international food wholesaler METRO, successfully completing a data centre exit marks a significant milestone in its wider technology transformation strategy.

Technology services and consulting company Wipro announced the completion of the large-scale, multi-year data centre migration programme for METRO.

The wholesaler's legacy IT operations have been migrated into a multi-cloud environment on Google Cloud.

The project forms a core part of METRO's cloud-first strategy, replacing ageing infrastructure with a cloud-based architecture designed to improve resilience and operational flexibility while scaling operations.

Khaled Bagban, CIO at METRO, says: “The successful completion of this programme marks a key milestone in METRO’s transformation journey towards a scalable, cloud-based and AI-ready IT landscape.

“Together with Wipro and our partner ecosystem, we have established a resilient and future-ready digital foundation that enables us to accelerate innovation and drive AI adoption at scale.

“This achievement reflects the strength of our collaboration and supports our ambition to become an AI-first company.”

Building a cloud-based digital backbone

The migration programme was delivered through a phased and risk-controlled approach, allowing METRO to transition from legacy infrastructure while maintaining operational continuity.

According to Wipro, the new cloud environment provides a secure and resilient digital backbone that strengthens cybersecurity while improving agility and digital capabilities across the organisation.

The transformation also removes infrastructure constraints that can limit innovation, creating a platform capable of supporting future AI initiatives and real-time business operations.

The project builds on a long-standing partnership between the two companies. Their technology relationship began in December 2020 and was further extended in June 2025.

Omkar Nisal, Europe CEO at Wipro, says: “Our long-standing partnership with METRO reflects Wipro’s ability to deliver large-scale enterprise transformation with precision, resiliency and measurable impact.”

Automating operations with AI

Alongside the migration itself, METRO has integrated Wipro Intelligence, the company's suite of AI-powered platforms, solutions and services.

The deployment introduces intelligent automation across several operational areas, including user lifecycle management.

Intelligent automation areas
  • Integrating advanced automation capabilities to manage service requests autonomously
  • Improving turnaround times, accuracy and overall operational efficiency
  • Applying advanced AI-driven engineering tools to accelerate software development cycles
  • Enhancing code quality and enabling faster issue resolution across the cloud ecosystem

According to Wipro, these capabilities help identify recurring patterns and systemic issues, supporting stronger operational decision-making while improving efficiency across the cloud estate.

What the migration means for data centres

METRO's programme reflects the growing number of enterprises shifting workloads from traditional infrastructure into cloud environments designed to support AI-enabled operations.

Tara Brady, President of Europe, Middle East and Africa at Google Cloud, says: “METRO’s successful data centre exit is a benchmark for enterprise modernisation across Europe.

“With a Google Cloud foundation, METRO has not only eliminated legacy infrastructure constraints but has strategically positioned itself to lead in the AI era.

“It’s a privilege to partner with METRO and Wipro on this journey, delivering the data architecture, scalability and security required to drive real-time innovation and long-term business value.”

The completion of the programme marks a major milestone in the strategic IT partnership between Wipro and METRO, delivering the cloud infrastructure foundation on which the wholesaler plans to build its next phase of AI adoption and digital transformation.
