Compass Datacenters has been recognised by ICG for leading industrialised construction, reshaping how hyperscale data centres are designed and delivered

Compass Datacenters (Compass) has been recognised as a global leader in industrialised construction, marking a significant milestone for owner-led innovation in data centre development.

The company has been named an ICMA® Platinum Medallion Winner for Excellence in Industrialised Construction by ICG, becoming the first and only data centre owner to receive the organisation’s highest level of recognition.

The award reflects nearly 15 years of work by Compass to apply manufacturing-style principles to the design, construction and operation of data centres.

By focusing on standardisation, prefabrication and repeatable processes, Compass has sought to address long-standing challenges in data centre delivery, including programme risk, cost predictability, safety and sustainability.

For data centre operators and hyperscale customers, these methods are increasingly relevant as demand accelerates and build timelines compress. Industrialised construction enables Compass to deliver campuses more quickly while maintaining consistency across regions and capacity phases.

A manufacturing mindset for data centres

Industrialised construction applies proven techniques from advanced manufacturing to the built environment. These include off-site fabrication, modular components, tightly-integrated supply chains and highly-repeatable design standards.

In data centre construction, where power, cooling and structural systems must be delivered with precision, this approach can significantly reduce variability and on-site complexity.

ICG’s Industrialised Construction Maturity Assessment evaluates how deeply these principles are embedded across an organisation’s operations. The assessment spans design, materials, construction practices, supply chain integration and sustainability. The Platinum Medallion represents the highest level of maturity and positions Compass as a benchmark for others to follow.

“This is a tremendous honour from ICG, which is doing such important work to advance the adoption of industrialised construction techniques that are game changers for the way the world builds,” says Nancy Novak, Ambassador and Former Chief Innovation Officer of Compass.

“One of the biggest reasons I joined Compass almost a decade ago was the opportunity to work for an organisation that was truly committed to industrialised construction. That was a fundamental part of our founder and CEO Chris Crosby's vision for Compass from Day 1.”

Compass’ approach has been applied across its global data centre campuses, allowing it to scale capacity while maintaining consistent quality and performance.

For customers deploying large amounts of compute, this repeatability is critical to aligning infrastructure delivery with business growth.

Owner-led innovation

A defining feature of the recognition is that Compass has been awarded as an owner rather than a contractor or supplier. This highlights the role that owners play in setting standards, shaping supply chains and driving adoption of new construction models.

“This Platinum Medallion from ICG is an incredible validation of our entire organisation's commitment to innovative and sustainable design and construction techniques,” said Amy Marks, SVP of Innovation at Compass.

“What makes this recognition particularly meaningful is that it reflects an owner-led commitment to transforming the way projects are conceived and delivered. Compass is not only reducing risk, enabling cost certainty, and delivering fastest to ready schedules but also helping elevate the entire construction ecosystem with our closely coupled supply chain partners.”

For data centre developers, owner-led industrialisation can unlock greater control over schedules and costs at a time when materials availability and labour constraints continue to affect the market. By working closely with manufacturing and construction partners, Compass has sought to remove uncertainty from critical path activities.

The company’s model also supports safer working environments by shifting labour-intensive activities away from site-based construction into controlled factory settings. This is particularly relevant for large campuses where build programmes can span multiple years and phases.

Setting a global benchmark

ICG highlighted Compass’ impact not only on its own projects but across the wider construction and data centre ecosystem.

As digital infrastructure becomes more central to economic activity, the methods used to deliver that infrastructure are under increasing scrutiny.

“ICG is thrilled to recognise Compass Datacenters as the first and only owner to achieve the ICMA® Platinum Medallion,” adds Melissa McEwen, Principal and Co-Founder of ICG.

“The ICMA assessment recognises global leaders who are demonstrating the impact of industrialised construction practices.

“The data is clear: when owners lead with intent, the entire industry advances.

“Compass is driving measurable impact across the supply chain and transforming the way we build. They have set the benchmark for owners and developers.”

For data centre operators, the recognition reinforces the role of industrialised construction as a practical response to rising demand, sustainability pressures and the need for predictable delivery at scale.

Compass’ Platinum Medallion status formalises its position as a reference point for how large-scale data centre infrastructure can be designed and built using manufacturing-led principles.
