DayOne breaks ground on its first data centre in Singapore, a 20MW facility with 100% renewables to support AI and high-density computing

DayOne has officially broken ground on its first data centre in Singapore, a 20MW site designed to support AI and high-performance workloads using green infrastructure.

The facility, covering 40,000 square metres of gross floor area, is scheduled to enter service in 2026.

Backed by a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sembcorp Power and a research partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the site forms part of Singapore’s broader ambition to expand AI-ready infrastructure and boost data centre efficiency in tropical climates.

AI-ready, renewable and purpose-built for the tropics

The site will support green-powered, high-density air-cooled GPU deployments and introduce hybrid air and liquid cooling systems

It will also be Singapore’s first data centre to pilot on-site Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) generation — an early proof-of-concept for hydrogen-based power in the digital infrastructure sector.

Both LEED Platinum and BCA Green Mark Platinum (GMDC:2024) certifications will be sought for the facility, aligning it with Singapore’s highest environmental standards.

Jamie Khoo, CEO of DayOne

“This facility marks our commitment to Singapore as both home base and regional hub while highlighting our long-term vision to power Southeast Asia’s digital transformation with green infrastructure,” says Jamie Khoo, Chief Executive Officer of DayOne.

“Our SG1 facility is an important milestone and a contribution to the nation’s ambition of being an AI-ready, sustainable digital economy.

“Backed by strong public-private collaboration, we’re building infrastructure that is purpose-built for AI workloads, cloud computing and innovation.”

DayOne was awarded development capacity under Singapore’s Pilot Data Centre Call for Application (DC-CFA), jointly administered by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Economic Development Board (EDB).

The award enables DayOne to anchor its presence in Singapore as part of the Singapore-Johor-Riau Islands (SIJORI) regional strategy.

“Congratulations to DayOne on its first data centre in Singapore,” says Aileen Chia, Deputy Chief Executive at IMDA.

“Data centre operators like DayOne play an important role in advancing energy efficiency and green energy solutions in support of our digital economy and the sustainable growth of data centres in Singapore.

“IMDA will continue to partner the industry to develop sustainable digital infrastructures and the ecosystem to serve the digital needs and growth of Singapore.”

Seah Yueh Chinn, Vice President at Digital Industry Singapore

Seah Yueh Chinn, Vice President at Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), adds: “We welcome DayOne’s commitment to expand its digital infrastructure in Singapore.

“This new facility will enhance Singapore’s competitiveness by providing access to compute-intensive technologies like AI, while enabling key sectors to manage critical applications and services locally.”

Long-term power agreement with Sembcorp

The facility will be fully powered by renewables through a 10-year PPA with Sembcorp Power, supported by bundled Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) sourced locally or imported via grid-to-grid connections.

Koh Chiap Khiong, President & CEO, Gas and Related Services and CEO, Singapore at Sembcorp

“The rapid rise of AI infrastructure is driving unprecedented energy demand — and meeting this demand sustainably is critical to the future of the data centre industry,” says Koh Chiap Khiong, President & CEO, Gas and Related Services and CEO, Singapore at Sembcorp.

“By providing scalable and reliable renewable energy, we enable data centres to grow responsibly.

“Our collaboration with DayOne reflects this commitment to powering the next generation of digital infrastructure with clean, future-ready solutions.”

Research partnership to test tropical cooling innovation

DayOne will also work with the National University of Singapore under the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed Phase 2.0 (STDCT 2.0) to pilot new cooling and energy efficiency technologies for use in tropical climates.

Professor Lee Poh Seng, NUS

“This initiative underscores our collective commitment to reimagine how data centres in the tropics can perform effectively and sustainably,” says Professor Lee Poh Seng, STDCT Programme Director and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NUS.

“Through the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed 2.0, we are field testing breakthroughs — from flexible-fuel generators/fuel cells to next generation liquid cooling — to demonstrate sustainability and high performance can go hand in hand.”
