GreenScale has launched 12 sustainability targets on Earth Day, focused on energy water and community impact across its data centre developments

GreenScale is introducing 12 sustainability commitments aimed at shaping how its data centres are designed, built and operated, marking the announcement on Earth Day.

The company, which has embedded sustainability into its strategy since launching in November 2024, is setting out measurable targets to guide its approach to digital infrastructure. These commitments focus on reducing environmental impact while supporting local energy systems and communities.

“We started this journey over a year ago with a structured materiality assessment to identify the environmental and social issues most relevant to our business and our stakeholders, highlighting the areas where we can have the most meaningful impact,” said Anna Dowson, Senior Director of Sustainability at GreenScale on LinkedIn.

“As a growing data centre company, it is important that our approach reflects industry priorities as well as the expectations of our communities, partners, customers and investors.

“What followed was a collaborative, thorough and interactive process to develop our commitments, alongside clear targets, that are both ambitious and grounded in practical delivery.”

Rather than a single announcement, GreenScale plans to release one commitment each week over a 12-week period, outlining how each target will be implemented and tracked.

Structuring sustainable data centre design

The commitments are organised around two pillars – Green Infrastructure and Scale for Good. Together, these define how GreenScale approaches both the physical build of data centres and their wider role in local ecosystems.

Green Infrastructure focuses on core elements of data centre development, including renewable energy use embodied carbon reduction and water efficiency. These areas are central to how facilities manage power and cooling, which are among the most resource-intensive aspects of operations.

The company also aims to contribute positively to local energy grids, reflecting how large-scale data centres can influence regional electricity systems. This includes aligning demand with available capacity and supporting more efficient energy use.

Scale for Good, the second pillar, addresses collaboration across communities supply chains and customers. This approach recognises that data centre sustainability extends beyond the facility itself, requiring coordination with partners and stakeholders.

Measurable targets and accountability

GreenScale states that each commitment is based on a materiality assessment, a process used to identify the most relevant environmental, social and governance priorities. The framework aligns with established standards including the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark.

By linking its commitments to these frameworks, the company is setting out a structure for reporting and accountability. Progress will be tracked against defined targets, providing visibility into how sustainability goals are being met

“We are proud to launch our twelve sustainability commitments, focusing on where we can make the biggest positive impact,” Anna said.

“As the data centre industry grows rapidly, so does our opportunity and responsibility to drive meaningful change. With clear targets and transparent tracking, we’ll measure our progress and hold ourselves accountable every step of the way.”

Supporting industry standards

GreenScale notes that several of its commitments extend beyond standard industry practices, signalling an intention to influence how sustainability is approached across data centre development.

The company has worked with strategic partner Salute to develop the framework, ensuring that commitments are aligned with operational requirements as well as environmental targets.

As data centre capacity expands to support cloud and AI workloads, sustainability frameworks such as this are becoming a core part of infrastructure planning, linking design decisions with long-term operational performance.
