Following a three-year cloud deal with Google and Australia’s Defence Department, Christmas Island may host a AI data centre supporting defence operations

Australia’s Christmas Island, which is famously known for the annual migration of red crabs from the Island’s rainforest to the coast, is preparing to become home to Google's latest AI data centre.

According to documents reviewed by Reuters and interviews with officials, the announcement comes after Google signed a cloud deal with the Department of Defence in early 2025.

As it stands, plans for the data centre to be built on the Indian Ocean outpost have not previously been disclosed with most details remaining under wraps.

Google is growing in the AI space and In September 2025, it announced the opening of a new AI data centre in the UK, as part of a two-year £5bn (US$6.82bn) investment programme.

At the time of the announcement, Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, said: “We founded DeepMind in London because we knew the UK had the potential and talent to be a global hub for pioneering AI.”

An asset for Christmas

Military experts claim that a data centre would be a valuable asset, with defence officials seeing the facility as a critical frontline in monitoring naval activity in the Indian Ocean.

It is reported that Google is in progressive talks to rent the land near the island’s airport to construct the site and a deal with a local mining company to support the hub's energy needs.

Bryan Clark, a former U.S. Navy strategist

Bryan Clark, a former U.S. Navy strategist, told Reuters: "The data centre is partly to allow you to do the kinds of AI-enabled command and control that you need to do in the future, especially if you rely on uncrewed systems for surveillance missions and targeting missions and even engagements.”

"If you've got a data centre on Christmas, you can do a lot of that through cloud infrastructure," he added.

Defence departments and Google

In July 2025, Australia's defence department entered a three-year cloud agreement with Google, with Britain's military announcing a similar Google cloud deal to boost intelligence sharing with the US.

Following this, in October 2025, Google applied for Australian environmental approvals so that it  can progress with building the first subsea cable connecting Christmas Island and the Australian city of Darwin, a location which the US Marine Corps are based for half of the year.

However, before final approval is given the Shire President of the Island, Steve Pereira, has said his administration is examining the potential impact the data centre will have on the community.

Best known for its red crab migration, the island has previously struggled with poor telecommunications and job opportunities.

Steve says: "There is support for it, providing this data centre actually does put back into the community with infrastructure, employment and adding economic value to the island."

"There are many industries on the island we have to protect, all of this will be closely considered for any new projects - whether it be defence or Google,” he added.

Two sources from Christmas Island and one from the defence sector said the data centre offered commercial advantages for Google due to its strategic Indian Ocean location between Africa, Asia and Australia, as well as its potential military applications.

Retired Navy Commodore Peter Leavy, told Reuters: "Christmas Island is quite well positioned to at least monitor what is going through Sunda Strait, Lombok Strait, Malacca Straits. It is a really good location."
