Meta Bets on a Missouri US$1bn Kansas City Data Centre

Meta has officially brought its Kansas City Data Centre online, marking a major addition to its global digital infrastructure and a US$1bn investment in Missouri.
The facility, which first broke ground in 2022, is now serving traffic and will form part of the backbone that connects billions of people worldwide to Meta’s platforms and services.
“In 2022, we selected Kansas City because it offered excellent infrastructure, a robust electrical grid, a strong pool of talent for construction and operations jobs, and incredible community partners,” says Brad Davis, Data Center Community and Economic Development Director at Meta.
“We are extremely proud to be part of this community, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership for years to come.
“Our thanks go to the State of Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri Partnership, Kansas City Area Development Council, Evergy, Missouri Department of Economic Development, Turner Construction - Kansas City and the rest of our amazing partners who have helped get us to this important milestone.”
Brad’s remarks highlight the scale of collaboration behind the facility. At peak construction, the site employed an average of 1,500 skilled trade workers. Once fully operational, it will support more than 100 permanent jobs.
For Missouri, the project is a clear demonstration of the state’s growing role as a hub for high-tech investment and data infrastructure.
“Meta’s grand opening in Kansas City is a powerful testament to Missouri’s ability to attract and support the most innovative companies in the world,” says Subash Alias, CEO of Missouri Partnership.
“This investment brings transformative technology, high-quality jobs, and lasting economic impact to our state, and we are proud that Meta chose Missouri as a key part of its future.”
A commitment to community and local growth
From the start, Meta has tied the development of the Kansas City Data Centre to wider community investment.
The company has directed more than US$1m in funding to schools and nonprofits in Clay County, Platte County and Kansas City itself.
In addition, Meta is backing local entrepreneurship with Community Accelerator events, focused on equipping small businesses with AI training and tools such as Meta AI.
“Meta’s investment in Kansas City is a clear signal that our city is a place where innovation, talent, and community come together,” says Mayor Quinton Lucas.
“We look forward to working with Meta to ensure this development integrates well with our community priorities and delivers meaningful benefits for Kansas City residents.”
That same message of local opportunity is echoed by Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, Missouri.
“Meta’s investment in Kansas City is more than a billion-dollar vote of confidence in our people and our potential,” Tracey says.
“From the thousands of skilled trade workers who helped build the facility to the operational jobs it will support for years to come, this project is creating real opportunities for Kansas Citians and strengthening our local workforce.”
Sustainability at the core of design
Meta has built the Kansas City Data Centre to its established environmental standards. Like all of its global facilities, the site is LEED Gold certified, a rating that recognises high performance in energy efficiency and sustainability.
Its electricity use is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy, reflecting Meta’s company-wide commitment to sustainable operations.
The facility also prioritises water stewardship. During construction, Meta implemented water management practices that reduced reliance on potable water.
Stormwater collected from on-site retention ponds was reused in construction activities, saving more than one million gallons of drinking water.
By combining scale, sustainability, and community investment, the Kansas City Data Centre sets a benchmark for how Meta continues to expand its infrastructure footprint while embedding local and environmental benefits.
