Why is CoreWeave Committing £1.5bn to UK AI Data Centres?

CoreWeave has confirmed a £1.5bn (US$2.05bn) investment in the UK to expand AI data centre capacity and operations, raising its total commitment in the country to £2.5bn (US$3.41bn). The company states that the funding is intended to build sustainable facilities that support large-scale AI workloads while reducing environmental impact.
The announcement arrives during President Donald Trump's state visit and is aligned with the UK Governmentās Compute Roadmap. This sets out the strategy for increasing compute power to support artificial intelligence research and deployment.
CoreWeave says its programme will provide advanced infrastructure for AI labs, enterprises, research organisations, startups and the public sector, while creating local jobs in engineering and operations.
āOur investment in the UK will establish one of the worldās largest concentrations of state-of-the-art, sustainable compute, unlocking new opportunities for innovation, economic growth and scientific discovery,ā says Michael Intrator, Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CoreWeave.
āIt allows us to deliver unparalleled AI performance with the lowest possible environmental impact, setting a new global standard. We look forward to collaborating with the UK Government and the broader ecosystem to drive the next wave of responsible AI leadership around the world.ā
Government backing for AI growth
Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomes the investment, highlighting the role of AI in reshaping services and infrastructure.
āArtificial Intelligence will drive incredible change in our country and has the potential to transform our public services and infrastructure,ā he says.
āThis investment by CoreWeave is a clear vote of confidence in Britainās potential to become a world leader in AI. I'm determined to back innovation and create more highly skilled jobs through partnerships like these, as we deliver on our Plan for Change.ā
The company positions the investment as part of a wider strategy to support responsible AI growth across the UK.
In addition to building new data centre capacity, the programme is expected to enable further collaboration with both government and private sector organisations seeking advanced computing capability.
Partnership with NVIDIA and DataVita
As part of the the investment, CoreWeave confirms a partnership with NVIDIA and Scottish data centre operator DataVita.
The initiative will deploy NVIDIA Grace Blackwell Ultra GPUs to power AI infrastructure in Scotland, fully backed by renewable energy sources. Closed-loop cooling technology will be introduced to reduce water consumption, continuing CoreWeaveās use of renewable energy across its European sites.
The company also outlines plans for an additional sovereign AI infrastructure deployment using NVIDIA GB300 GPUs and NVIDIA RTX PRO Blackwell Server Edition GPUs. These systems are designed to handle high-performance AI workloads securely and efficiently.
āThis collaboration strengthens Scotlandās role as a driving force in the economy,ā says Danny Quinn, Managing Director at DataVita.
āWith our sustainable, future-ready platform, Scotland is well positioned to become a hub for the UKās AI ambitions, fostering innovation, driving growth and supporting the UKās position as a global AI leader.ā
Expanding global AI infrastructure
The announcement follows CoreWeaveās earlier commitment of Ā£1bn (US$1.37bn) in May 2024 to establish and expand UK operations. That investment enabled the company to bring two AI data centres online in six months.
Beyond the UK, CoreWeave has disclosed plans with local government in the United States to allocate up to US$6bn to equip a data centre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
CoreWeave also supports AI startups and founders through CoreWeave Ventures, which provides direct capital investment, compute-for-equity opportunities and technical collaboration. This initiative aims to help smaller companies access the infrastructure needed to develop AI solutions.
The company further extends its profile in the UK as the Official AI Cloud Computing Partner of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, providing cloud capacity for its first large-scale computing facility.
