AI hyperscaler CoreWeave will invest $6bn into Lancaster, Pennsylvania site to expand its US data centre footprint, boosting local infrastructure and jobs

CoreWeave has confirmed it will invest more than US$6bn in a new data centre in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The hyperscale facility will initially offer 100 megawatts (MW) of capacity, with the ability to expand to 300 MW, and is purpose-built to support high-performance AI workloads.

The site is one of the first of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region and becomes part of CoreWeave’s growing network of 33 AI data centres, including 28 across the United States.

CoreWeave, listed on NASDAQ under CRWV, markets itself as “the AI Hyperscaler” and says this facility will help position the region as a hub in the global AI economy.

Focus on national AI competitiveness and regional impact

The announcement of the investment landed during a CEO roundtable hosted at Carnegie Mellon University, as part of the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit.

Led by Senator Dave McCormick, the summit welcomed figures such as President Donald J. Trump, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator John Fetterman. Attendees discussed AI infrastructure, national competitiveness, energy resources and workforce development.

Michael Intrator, CEO, Chairman and co-founder at CoreWeave

Michael Intrator, CoreWeave Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board and CEO, links the project directly to US leadership in AI.

“The demand for high-performance AI compute is relentless, and CoreWeave is scaling a cloud purpose-built for AI to meet it and strengthen US leadership,” said Michael. “This data centre will accelerate innovation and drive economic growth across the region. We look forward to working with leaders like Senator McCormick and Governor Shapiro to ensure this investment delivers meaningful, lasting impact.”

The Lancaster site is expected to generate about 600 construction jobs during its build phase.

At launch, the data centre will support 70 full-time technical and operational roles, with plans to scale up to 175.

According to CoreWeave, every job within the facility has a knock-on effect, creating over six additional roles across related industries.

Workforce development and streamlined planning

Governor Josh Shapiro frames the US$6bn commitment as part of a broader plan to boost the technology sector across Pennsylvania. He says the state is prioritising investment in workforce readiness, energy access and permitting reform to attract long-term infrastructure projects like this one.

“Pennsylvania is competing again and bringing in billions of dollars in new investment to the Commonwealth to support our technology sector, and CoreWeave’s US$6bn investment will continue to build on that work – creating good-paying jobs as Pennsylvania workers build, maintain, and operate a new AI data centre in Lancaster County,” said Governor Shapiro.

“My Administration is leading the way on safe, responsible, and effective use of AI – while keeping people at the centre of Pennsylvania’s AI strategy,” he added.

“We are ensuring our Commonwealth is open to the major investments like this one from CoreWeave by investing in our workforce, building out more energy resources, securing funding for site development, speeding up the Commonwealth’s permitting, licensing and certification processes, and working to make sure Pennsylvania continues to be a national energy leader.

“With this commitment, CoreWeave is creating opportunities for our workers, generating new revenue for our local communities, and ensuring the future of AI runs right through Pennsylvania.”

Senator McCormick describes the project as evidence that Pennsylvania is ready to take on a national leadership role in artificial intelligence infrastructure. “I’m thrilled to welcome this transformative investment in our great Commonwealth,” he says.

“This Energy and Innovation Summit is a powerful testament to Pennsylvania’s readiness and ability to lead – to generate thousands of good-paying jobs, to unleash our incredible energy resources, and to power the next AI and economic revolution, further strengthening America’s resilience and independence. I’m deeply grateful to CoreWeave for their tremendous commitment to Pennsylvania’s future.”

Partnership-led development model for long-term growth

CoreWeave will be the sole tenant, but the Lancaster site is being co-developed by Chirisa Technology Parks and Machine Investment Group.

CoreWeave will collaborate with its partners across workforce recruitment and community engagement. The company positions this approach as a replicable model for regional data centre investment tied to AI growth and job creation.
