CyrusOne: A pioneer of the data centre industry

Leading global data centre developer and operator CyrusOne, reached a significant milestone with the construction of its fifth data centre in Frankfurt

CyrusOne, a leading global data centre developer and operator, has officially broken ground on its fifth data centre in Frankfurt, Germany, further solidifying the city's position as Europe's data centre hub. The initial plans for expansion date back to November 2021, when the site in Hanau was acquired.

The new facility, designated as FRA5, is strategically located in Hanau, approximately 25 kilometres east of Frankfurt's city centre, providing convenient access to major fibre optic networks and transportation infrastructure.

With an IT capacity of 54 megawatts (MW), FRA5 will span two buildings, encompassing a total of 18,000 square meters of technical space. The data centre will be equipped with CyrusOne's signature best-in-class data centre solutions, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.

A commitment to sustainability

CyrusOne is a leading global data centre developer and operator, with a portfolio of over 50 data centres in key markets around the world. The company is committed to providing its customers with the critical infrastructure they need to support their digital transformation initiatives.

The Hanau site was chosen for its proximity to Frankfurt, access to renewable energy sources, and potential for future expansion. CyrusOne is committed to sustainability and has incorporated eco-friendly design elements into FRA5, such as rainwater harvesting systems and energy-efficient cooling technologies.

The company is also a member of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, which aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of data centres to net zero by 2030.

“It is a great privilege for CyrusOne to mark this important milestone and our ongoing development and expansion in Germany alongside such important regional leaders,” said Carsten Schneider, Managing Director of CyrusOne in Germany. “We are tremendously proud of what this development stands for, with sustainability and biodiversity central to the design and operation of the data centre.

“This, alongside our commitment to supporting the local economy with employment opportunities, as well as the digitalisation of Hanau will remain ongoing priorities for CyrusOne in Germany.”

The construction of FRA5 is expected to be completed in 2024, bringing CyrusOne's total data centre footprint in Frankfurt to over 100,000 square meters. The new facility will create a wealth of employment opportunities for residents as well as contribute to the economic growth of the Hanau region.

Supporting the digital transformation

CyrusOne is a trusted partner for global enterprises, with its data centres having been designed to meet the highest standards of reliability, security, and performance.

The data centre's Energy Management System (EMS) will comply with ISO50001, the international standard for energy management. This will help to ensure that the facility is operating as efficiently as possible. Additionally, heat will be recovered from the IT equipment and reused throughout the campus, further reducing the data centre's energy consumption.

The data centre is also designed to achieve a BREEAM "Very Good" rating, a leading sustainability assessment method for buildings, meaning that the facility will meet high standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction.

In addition to its focus on energy efficiency, the data centre also incorporates several features that promote biodiversity and improve air quality. The architectural design seamlessly integrates 2,500 square metres of naturally cleansing green walls, with these green spaces helping to filter pollutants from the air and provide habitat for wildlife.

With its strong global presence, commitment to sustainability, and focus on innovation, CyrusOne is well-positioned to continue to be a leader in the data centre industry.
