Kao Data's second Harlow data centre now fully operational

Equipped with cutting-edge technologies, KLON-02 is designed to deliver exceptional efficiency and sustainability, upholding Kao Data's reputation

Kao Data, a leading developer and operator of high-performance data centres for enterprise, cloud, HPC, and AI, has announced that the construction of its second Harlow data centre, KLON-02, is now fully complete, commissioned, and operational.

The new 10MW NVIDIA DGX-Ready data centre, which is located on Kao Data's existing Harlow campus, provides an additional 3,400 square metres of data centre space, bringing the total capacity of the campus to over 6,800 square metres. KLON-02 is designed to support the growing demand for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, and it is equipped with the latest technologies to deliver industry-leading levels of efficiency and sustainability.

Kao Data is a leading developer and operator of high-performance data centres for enterprise, cloud, high-performance computing (HPC), and AI. The company's data centres are designed to be highly energy-efficient, sustainable, and secure and have a proven track record of delivering mission-critical data centre solutions to its customers.

A significant step forward

David Bloom, Chairman of Kao Data says: “Today marks a significant step forward in Kao Data’s journey, and it’s rewarding to see our vision for the Harlow campus further evolving. As the data centre industry reaches a major inflection point, it’s vital that UK government ambitions to become a world leader in AI and research are matched by world-class infrastructure, capable of supporting advanced workloads.

“Through the continued development of our high-performance data centre portfolio and our ethos for technical excellence, we believe that Kao Data will continue to play an integral role in the future of UK compute.”

The new data centre will continue to follow Kao Data’s award-winning, OCP-Ready, and hyperscale-inspired design blueprint, providing customers with a secure, sustainable, and scalable home for their mission critical workloads. Organisations can tailor their deployments within the data centre to match their unique requirements, including the ability to incorporate liquid-cooled hardware, which is ideal for HPC applications that generate significant heat.

The data centre boasts world-class connectivity, ensuring seamless data exchange and access to cloud services. This connectivity is essential for organisations that rely on cloud-based applications and services. Direct connections to all major cloud providers facilitate effortless cloud integration, which enables enterprises to easily migrate workloads to the cloud or leverage cloud-based resources to enhance their IT infrastructure.

A beacon of sustainability and efficiency

In addition to its impressive technical capabilities, KLON-02 has been engineered to achieve the highest standards of sustainability, meeting the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) 'Excellent' certification. This recognition highlights the facility's commitment to environmental stewardship and its dedication to minimising its ecological footprint.

KLON-02 is powered by a combination of 100% certified renewable energy sources and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a groundbreaking approach that cuts net CO2 emissions from backup power generators by a staggering 90%. This innovative strategy not only reduces the facility's environmental impact but also empowers customers to directly lower their scope 3 emissions associated with their computing needs.

“Driven by AI, rack and power densities are increasing at an unprecedented rate, so it’s critical that the data centres of the future can accommodate the latest breakthroughs in GPU-powered computing and are ready to embrace the benefits of liquid cooling,” explains Paul Finch, Chief Technology Officer, Kao Data.

“By pushing the boundaries of our original design envelope, and embracing a culture of continuous innovation, KLON-02 sets a new standard for industrial-scale data centres and one which will directly help our customers reduce the environmental impact of their workloads.”
