atNorth announces new sustainable data centre in Finland

The data centre services company continues expanding in Finland, with a new site helping to advance company sustainability goals and community support

atNorth has announced a heat reuse enabled site in Kouvola, Finland, which will open with 60MW to heat to the community.

The new hyperscale facility will be atNorth’s tenth data centre and is intended for colocation customers and built-to-suit projects for hyperscalers. With this further expansion into Finland, the site, called FIN04, aligns to the company’s growth strategy as a leading Nordic colocation, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI) service provider.

Its initial 60MW phase is due to be completed by the second half 2025 and is aiming to provide heat and hot water to the surrounding community.

Developing a low-carbon future across the Nordic nations

Finland currently ranks second in the World Economic Forum’s Green Future Index, cited as one of the leading Nordic nations working to develop a sustainable, low-carbon future.

In particular, the Kouvola region in Finland is well-known for its sustainability practices. The city works to promote a circular economy throughout its infrastructure to suit the needs of local communities and businesses.

The company is working closely with the city and its energy partner, KSS Energia, to ensure that the new FIN04 site will be enabled with heat reuse capabilities. As a result, it aims to enable recovery of excess heat from the data centre to be recycled for possible reuse within the local community. It will have an immediate power supply of 60 megawatts (MW) with the first phase, with the goal of eventually being able to power with several hundred megawatts when fully built.

atNorth has continued to expand its data centre presence in Finland, having acquired two sites from Advania in January 2023. In addition, it has only continued its efforts to grow in a sustainable way via construction of a third facility in Finland and expansion into Sweden. The company also has plans to develop a 30MW data centre in Denmark which is expected to go live at the end of 2024.

Additionally, the company powers its data centres with 100% renewable sources, with its services aiming to be environmentally responsible to offer enterprises a pathway to low-carbon digital operations. Its customers are supported via a decarbonising platform to improve their environmental footprint, lower their costs and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable planet.

“This agreement is yet another hallmark moment for atNorth. Kouvola is a critical location for our next site as we continue to expand and meet the growing demand for high performance services,” says atNorth’s CEO, Eyjolfur Magnus Kristinsson.

“We are in ongoing discussions with several AI companies, hyperscalers as well as international organisations requiring High Performance Computing, who see the clear benefit of moving to the Nordics to decarbonise their IT workloads. True to our vision, we are leading the way in future-proofed data centre infrastructure across the Nordics.”
