Exclusive Video: Digital Infrastructure with Guy Willner

Guy Willner, CEO of IX Africa Data Centers and Chairman of the International Data Centre Group delves into the dynamic landscape of digital infrastructure

In May, Guy Willner took to the virtual floor at Data Centre LIVE on the topic of digital infrastructure in the data centre industry.

Willner, who is CEO of IXAfrica Data Centers and Chairman of the International Data Centre Group, discussed the pivotal role played by data centres in catalysing innovation and advancement across industries, with a particular focus on the African continent.

Data Centre LIVE allowed attendees from across the sector and beyond to explore the cutting-edge trends and technologies in cloud computing, edge computing, and 5G connectivity, and gain insights into how data centres are driving the digital revolution and shaping the interconnected future we inhabit.

Digital Infrastructure

Entrepreneur, business builder and enthusiast Guy Willner has more than 20 years of leadership experience in high-tech companies, taking his expertise to emerging economies with ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking.

“Not only does Africa as a continent have an enormous number of cities with over a million population, it will also probably double over the next 30 years,” Willner said in his  keynote. “So that's a really enormous market and it will become far bigger than many others. You can't avoid a market such as Nigeria alone with 220, 230 million people. It’s a massive market already and is generating a lot of interest.”

But there are some limitations. He added: “One of the challenges is getting fibre inland to landlocked countries and to big population concentrations inland. That's being worked on by a number of companies at the moment, but a lot more investment is obviously needed.

“It's a difficult place, but in the past few years, we've seen that Europe is not an easy place either,” he stated, encouraging people in the industry to acknowledge Africa’s untapped potential.

“Make sure you do your research. Make sure you have people in the country who understand how things operate, how you get a planning permission, how you get telecoms regulations, certificates and stuff like that. And I'm not talking about anything sinister. I'm talking about understanding how the process works. That's really key because I think the danger in any emerging market is coming in and getting impatient and trying to expedite stuff.”
