Exclusive Video: Edge Computing Forum with Jon Eaves

CEO & Founder of Edge Centres Jon Eaves shares his insights on edge computing during his fireside at Data Centre LIVE Virtual 2023

A veteran data centre builder and self-confessed edge evangelist, Founder & CEO of the industry’s fastest-growing edge data centre company Edge Centres, Jon Eaves, took to the stage at Data Centre LIVE to talk all things edge.

During his 45-minute session with Stage Two host Tom Swallow, Eaves gets to grips with what the edge is and how demand for it grows.

Edge Computing Forum with Jon Eaves

Within 18 months of founding Edge Centres, Eaves positioned Edge Centres as the leading edge data centre player in Southeast Asia, expanding its existing footprint in Australia and kicking off an expansion into the US.

And this is just the beginning for Eaves, who has big plans for both Edge Centres and for the sector as a whole, supporting, empowering, and solving the problems of a future built on data

A firm believer that the edge is the future of our data-driven world, he is committed to building the infrastructure that will support, enable, and empower that future.

“The idea of Edge computing,” Eaves explained in his one-man panel, “is you store that data and that compute closer to the end user. It’s primarily about reducing the latency and bandwidth requirements by processing the data in proximity to where it’s generated.”

Leveraging his three decades of experience in the data centre industry, Eaves shared how this paradigm helps minimise costing and being the driving force behind the increasing demand for data in the digital era.

He added: “I think the biggest curve for us has been how to deploy technology into countries where they aren't used to such large variance amounts of compute and storage coming through.

“And then it's like, imagine you’re going to paint a house and being told you had to pick a colour and then seeing that Dulux catalogue of a thousand colours - there's no there's no correlations, no similarity. I don't have one customer that's doing the same as another. And you know, we've got 700 customers now ordering 700 different things, all which are partial edge or related to.

“This is the early days of an AI learning engine where we're just looking at what the consumers and the customers do, what the customer's customers are doing, and then we’re trying to map what is our best hardware.”
